I dont have a distortion pedal.

I have overdrive and fuzz pedals coming out the wazoo, but not a distortion.

Plenty to choose from "out there"

Which ones really deliver.

Thanks

Yeah, was lookin at the yellow MXR one...
Whats the deal with them having to be original though?

This classic mustard yellow box has always had its own loud voice in the expansive distortion universe. The magic of the Distortion Plus is the abilty to schizophrenically pull off various personalites of overdrive, distortion, or fuzz depending on the rig youre running through. From the scooped metal madness of Randy Rhoads to the creamy streamlined crunch of Sugar, this box, uhhh, molds itself to the your own equipment and style. MXR spent some quality time and really voiced this one well. So much so that the absense of the typical tone knob isnt even missed. By twisting a combination of the gain and level knobs you can effortlessly nail the classic valvey chime of ACDC, the deep dark tone of Van Halen, or the relentless raspiness of Rage Against The Machine. This is the unsung heros of the stompbox world and its ebb and flow popularity has stood the test of time.

hmmmm

Whats the difference between Distortion, Overdrive and Fuzz in anyways?

wellll distortion is the clean sound of the guitar with a clipping of the waveform on top of that. id characterise it as being DIRTY.

overdrive is pushing the clean signal to a point where it clips. basically driving the volume beyond the amp's capability sort of. id characterise this as GROWLY or WARM AND SMOOTH SWEET ROCK BABY.

fuzz is a bit more complicated. its clipping the signal much more extremely and cancels the original tone. i think it changes the sine waves to square waves(dont worry i dont really understand that). fuzz also plays with the harmonic qualities of the tone making it dissonant in places. id characterise it as HAIRY FUZZY SCREAMING

i hope that helps. im sure it wont though.

EDIT: ah i did in fact reference those pages.

I know how different they sound, just wondered why they sound different.

The catagorys of Distortion/Overdrive/Fuzz are ultimately redundant as they are all variations of the same thing really...

A distortion is just a different kind of distortion to overdriven distortion and fuzzy distortion.

well that's not really true either... overdrive and fuzz are two totally different things, achieved in totally different ways, as G-Stereo pointed out...

fuzz pedals were originally designed to make guitars sound like trumpets...

They are totally different types of distortion then.

Thats a deadly link Seanc, cheers

Ah - so you'll be wanting an Ibanez TS9 with the 808 mod.

Thats a Tubescreamer (on tic)?
I've been curious about these for a while.
Did not think they gave that kind of crunchieness, thought they were more of a fuzz/sustain typa jobbie.

eh... Whats an 808 mod?
