I’m sure I said this before, but it was J Mascis in Manchester in 2001 that did it for me. Plugs at every gig since. I’ve got Pacato ones that are just like turning down the volume knob, they’re great.

Is that the ACS Pacato?

I went on to the presale late this morning and the only tickets were right at the side of the stage so I’m going to take my chances in the general sale to get a better spot.

Yep, I’m on my second pair, the first ones were Planet Waves. They’re dead easy to clean too, I just pop the filters out and soak them in a bit of hydrogen peroxide.

I got my hearing tested a while back. I was told "no significant damage". I could have hugged her

I did recently too but she was telling me what I already knew, just in more technical terms. Fair bit of loss in the 'upper mids' circa 2-4khz as well as the normal ageing loss in the higher freqs. My stupid brain is 'filling in the gaps' with tinnitus too. Finding it hard to follow conversations if there is any background noise as the common sibilant sounds/consonants are in the higher frequencies apparently.

I have only myself to blame.

Joining in the seated tickets, with tinnitus (thanks Mogwai, Olympia Rock Action Tour 2001) who has worn earplugs at everything since. Going to get them properly tested soon so I'm aware of exactly where I'm lacking.

Ugh. Been a while since I experienced the misery of going tickets for a popular show. Could have bagged upper tier seated but was holding off for 2 standing. Now have nothing! Ahh well. Possibility of another show surely?

It's funny, was trying to remember the loudest gig I was ever at, and I think it was Television at Vicar St. Not the band themselves, but some piano piece was playing inbetween bands and it was excruciatingly loud.

That's mad. Flaming Lips at Vicar St was crazy loud too actually, bass-wise, flappy trouser action.

I saw television and the flaming lips in vicar street but I don't remember the volume. I remember clear noise warnings at a Hijokaidan gig years ago so I'm presuming that must have been the loudest I've been to but I had ear plugs and stayed back so it didn't seem that bad. Sonic Youth in Vicar St gave me a bit of a fright, I forgot earplugs and when I came out of the venue after I thought i had serious damage, it seemed i was almost deaf except with horrible tinnitus. I was relieved when it passed

After gigs in the late 80's / early 90's my ears would be ringing for 2 days or more.
But when you are young you think nothing of it.

I always think volume level at gigs is like spice level in a curry. With Indian food, everyone has a different preference, from Korma to Vindaloo. But there's a level at which flavour is just obliterated by heat and you can no longer taste the different elements.

And the same with gigs - there's a level at which it just becomes a deafening roar and you can't tell what song is being played or what instruments are even playing. I remember seeing Sugar back in the early 90s and the sheer volume ruined the gig. Just a massive roar of noise with no distinguishable melodies. Might as well have been a Sunn O))) gig. Fair enough if it's Merzbow or Hijokaiden - the noise is the point - but why do it to great melodies and songs?

I’ve seen Merzbow, Swans, MBV, Khanate, Whitehouse, etc. but the loudest/most uncomfortably loud were Ministry.

I think the most surprisingly loud I saw were Doves in TBMC around the time Lost Souls came out. Jeans flapping against my legs and people running for the door. I had earplugs thankfully, but they were far louder than even Boredoms or At the Drive-In in the same venue.

Also Go! Team were deafeningly loud in the Olympia one time. They were fine in the Village and in Tripod, but for some reason the gig in the Olympia was super loud.

Sonic Youth played Vicar St???! Jesus christ 2009 was not a good year for me.
