My memory for gigs is really poor. I just listened to Alan Averill's podcast. He was talking about the recent Kreator , Anthrax & Testament gig in the point. He mentioned seeing Kreator in the top hat in 1990. I was at it as well, but can't remember a thing about it.

is it really sold out now? wtf?

i was about 16 when i saw sonic youth in mcgonagles and got the shock of my life when my ears were ringing for days afterwards. went to the doctor who said there's nothing could be done. wore earplugs pretty much always after that. the ringing died down mostly

All I remember from that gig is everyone going “what the fuck that’s not chuck schuldinger” when Death played.

Loudest thing I ever encountered wasn't even a gig. Got dragged to Bruxelles one night and they were playing AC/DC. I don't think there was a volume knob, just a thousand treble knobs that all went up to a thousand. Which meant me ears felt like they were being stabbed by a thousand knives.

Needless to say I left quickly.

True but still, I liked the albums around that period. I saw them at ATP in 2000, one of the worst gigs I’ve ever seen.
I saw them at Witnness(?) around then and they were a bit shit. Then I saw them when Sonic Nurse came out, they supported The Chemical Brothers in Marley Park and they were incredible. The crowd was all ravers and dance heads but they drank up the guitar noise.

Should have gone to that too. Ah well.

The only time I saw them was one of their most notorious gigs.

SY opened with a brand new 23-minute sonic assault, “J’Accuse Ted Hughes” (then titled “New Drone” and later to appear as side 1 of SYR 7) and the band performed the bulk of the soon-to-be released “NYC Ghosts & Flowers”. “Free City Rhymes” and “Renegade Princess” were played instrumentally. Kim sang “Nevermind” and “Side2Side”, Lee sang “NYC Ghosts & Flowers”. The encore was “Lightnin” and “Sunday”.
This was the gig that spawned the fabled NME headline “Goodbye 20th Century, Goodbye Talent”!

I saw them at Marley Park too. They were class that day. Also saw them at Sunstroke in Dalymount in 93. That was a superb performance.

I was at dalymount. All I remember about them was they kept throwing their guitars over the stage and fishing them back with the guitar cables. Most of the audience probably weren't too impressed.

Only Thurston did that with his guitar. The feed back was cool. I loved it. Couldn't tell you if it was a good gig because it was my first one (June 1993).

I saw MBV in 2009 in when they did ATP. Even with earpluds (handed out by staff before the gig) it was physically hard to stand close to the stage. You could almost feel the waves of sound pushing you back, which was impressive but bizzare.

My oldest brother saw them in SFX years ago. He said a friend of his passed out during the chord from hell bit because of the volume. Didn’t actually think that was possible
