So Putin seems to be in some trouble over his less than democratic democracy, yesterdays protests were the biggest in the country since the fall of the soviets. Also remarkable was the fact that the police didn't just arrest people en masse as is their usual practise. Will we see him thrown out of office?Probably not as he enjoys approval ratings in the 60's so he still has most of the country behind him, especially those outside the urban areas. Will he have to make some changes so that the system appears more democatic? If he's smart* he'll do that anyway,he could well still rule for the next 12 years once he keeps the average citizens standard of living relatively high.

*Given the position he's in already and the way Russia has used its oil/gas riches to political advantage particularly in Europe it would appear he is quite smart.

The view from Russia

Despite the reports in the media and against any public
knowledge, the promoter of a massive Israeli attack on Syria is
the axis India-Russia-Turkey-Saudi Arabia.
The axis
US-Germany-France-China is against such an attack from obvious
reasons. Not many people know that Russia is one of Israel's
largest military partners
and India is Israel's largest client.

If a direct conflict between Iran and Israel erupts, Russia and
Saudi Arabia will gain the advantages on oil increasing prices.

On the other hand, China and Europe are expected to loose from
an oil crisis as a result of a conflict. Based on Israeli plans,
the attack on Iran will last only 48 hours but will be so
destructive that Iran will be unable to retaliate or recover and
the government will fall. It is hard to believe that Hamas or
Hezbollah will try to get involved in this conflict.

So the pussy riot fuss didn't do him too much harm overall and I would imagine it shored up his support amongst the more conservative elements within Russia.
Aside from P.R. there is still plenty of people being locked up for the crime of opposing the government, this lady being the latest, next up is probably the de-facto opposition figurehead Alexey Navalny who is currently being investigated for embezzlement.

Going back to Navalny-he's seen by some opponents of Putin as a stooge of the Kremlin who's main responsibility is to lead any serious opposition down various dead ends and so emasculate the opposition before it becomes a real threat.I guess the result of his embezzlement case will prove that argument either way.

mad yolks. ive still got a serious hankering to visit st. petersburg next year. wife wont go because of the whole pussy riot thing.
