So Putin seems to be in some trouble over his less than democratic democracy,yesterdays protests were the biggest in the country since the fall of the soviets.Also remarkable was the fact that the police didn't just arrest people en masse as is their usual practise.Will we see him thrown out of office?Probably not as he enjoys approval ratings in the 60's so he still has most of the country behind him,especially those outside the urban areas.Will he have to make some changes so that the system appears more democatic?If he's smart* he'll do that anyway,he could well still rule for the next 12 years once he keeps the average citizens standard of living relatively high.
*Given the position he's in already and the way Russia has used its oil/gas riches to political advantage particularly in Europe it would appear he is quite smart.
