Some racial justice activists were frustrated that the trial did not generate the same coverage as police-involved shootings that have killed black men. At the start of the trial, in early November, local activists were surprised to find the courtroom empty of the women’s groups that have supported accusers in other rape trials. And major networks carried little to no coverage of the trial or its outcome.

Do you think that guy is right? Speaking up when someone else is shit talking sounds like it might change things but ... well, in the 80s when my Physics teacher was abusing boys all around him, I never heard him make degrading or sexual comments about kids when he was in a social situation. In fact I remembering him making disparaging remarks about "queers"

I liked where he was going with the "we need to figure out how society is producing abusive men" but tbh I don't think he really got to the nub of how to do it.

Did you socialise with said teacher? He mentions shit talking women as something to call people out on but you've bizarrely jumped from that to your anecdote without even finishing your sentence. Do you disagree that speaking up when up hear friends shit talking women might change how women are viewed?

I guess what I'm getting at is calling people out might make behaving like an asshole less acceptable, but I don't see how it's going to stop criminal physical and sexual abuse. Your man above kinda conflates the two. What I was trying to point out with the story about the teacher is that abusers and trash-talkers aren't necessarily the same people. I would bet any amount of money that he never publicly talked about children in a sexual way (and yes I did have some limited grown-up social contact with him)

Or hey, maybe a certain proportion of abuse is opportunistic and happens because the abuser feels somehow sanctioned by society (examples being the much higher rates of rape and domestic violence in some other cultures), and by calling people out we can make sure that they don't feel sanctioned, and then only actual psychos will be abusers.

Making it not seem ok for men to treat women like shit whether that be verbal or physical assault is the goal so achieving one will very likely lead to at least helping with the other. Doing nothing will certainly not change anything. Ya know as long as we men accept our friends treating women as lesser people nothing will change.

I need to watch the video again but I got the impression he meant children being affected by the abuse of women as opposed to the actual children being abused but at the same time I'd presume that they all tie in together anyhow.
