Given the state the West left post-Gadaffi Libia in I'm not so sure removing Assad would be such a good move. Although Western support for the 'moderate' rebels has had much the same result as Assads removal would for much of Syria.
Its all geopolitics, Bahrain had its own Arab Spring moment but the US 5th fleet is based there so it were never going to be a candidate for regime change and 'democratisation'.
