Janer banned (1 Viewer)

'it's only the internet' is lazy and presumptuous. It doesn't look at the fact that sexism/classism/racism/ homophobia are very real experiences and important issues for people who post here. If putting it down to internet fun is ok for you, so be it, but let other people air their objections without being ridiculed.

Well, thanks Aoife. I said that. It's nice that you think I'm lazy and presumptuous. :(

And I have totally let people air their objections - the only time I ridiculed someone was when they said "end of", because yer one the slapper on big brother used to say it.

I'm saying that different rules apply on the internet. What could be regarded as intimidating behaviour doesn't apply in the same way when you can't actually see the person.

In the mid-80's when they were educating us all on the spread of AIDS, Ian Dury (R.I.P.) was on the telly on that durty channel 4 sticking a rubber johnny (It's what he called it) onto a cucumber.

It was called education.

We used to ban bukes before they were read based on the titles. We did the same with movies.

We have come a long way in this cuntry.

At least I thought we had.

Sorry Snakyboobs, I don't mean it personally, but the idea that things can't hurt you through the internet is pushing it. Intimidation and abuse do happen on the web. It may have less of an impact than someone calling a bunch of girls sluts to their faces, but it still has a negative impact. Again, this may not apply to you so it isn't really your place to speak on behalf of those who it does apply to, or to minimise their feelings on the subject with abstract theorising about channels of communication. It clearly upset a lot of people. *hugs snakybus*

Yeah, basically, it was just a disgusting post. And Pantone's point is important, it's not like Janer hasn't done it before. It's clear from his posting history that he doesn't have particularly modern views on women, and nobody's posts here are taken in total isolation, but in the context of their Thumped history. Even though I don't really like the whole 'ironic' sexism thing either, when someone is already a total misogynist (cue JANER trying to respond by pointing out that he can't possibly hate women because he has a ladyfriend), it's not ever 'ironic'.

It is indeed, too, up to Pete what gives him the least hassle. Thumped is the freest of the internet message boards around these parts, too, so I don't think it's out of line to do a temporary banning of someone who frequently says and does stuff that's disgusting to lots of people, and means it.

I don't know if his age is an issue, yeah, but there's a difference between someone who makes it clear he's playing at being a sleaze, and someone (namely Janer) who is genuinely a dirty old man.

hey jane, i think you were a bit harsh here. just because you use fancy words, all this amounts to is you calling him an asshole because he's displayed asshole-ish characteristics before. i'm sure you don't need a history lesson from me to tell you this kind of stuff leads to sadness and depression. it's great to see people are still feeling high and mighty around here... it's reaffirming in ways you can't imagine. (ha, would you listen to him feeling all high and mighty...) you guys need people like janer. he makes you feel ok about being mindlessly bored.
there, i've said it. what happens now?
p.s. i love jane.

ha! says the bully! ha ha ha. sorry aoife. i had to say it.
p.s. putting 'boobs' at the end of someone's name doesn't 'cut it' either, it equates to insidious patronism.

funny how its only the blokes saying he shouldnt have been banned.
you cant accept that a woman would find his thread offensive?

God didn't give you an opinion, he gave you breasts.

Not my fault, blame religion.

I've been out burning thumped.com flags all day in protest.

here's the original thread for those as confused as i was until page 11 of this thread. why do people feel compelled to use words like dude and yo and lame when involved in a frank online exchange of words?
