Ireland vs. France (1 Viewer)

I don't blame Henry. Players will try to get whatever advantage they can. Handballs are ten a penny. It's up the officials to spot them. The linesman should have seen it.
Not sure why Anelka wasn't booked for his dive to try and win a penalty, by the way.

Paul McShane should have dealt with that ball. He had no awareness that Henry was behind him and complacently let the ball run, thinking it was going out. Even if he thought that was the case, he should have shepherded it out, got his body between the ball and anyone who might be behind him. Shocking. An absolute indictment of the player. I think plenty of supporters had a dark foreboding when O'Shea came off injured and fuck was it borne out.

Superb performance. Can't praise the team enough for their general play, their workrate, their willingness to get forward and support the front two while also getting bodies behind the ball and seeing out the odd period of French pressure.

Terrible finishing. Icouldn't believe we created so much. Lawrence, after a poor start, was immense. Robbie Keane an absolute model of leadership and link play and a great finish for the goal. If only his touch was better taking it round Lloris (who outstanding again). Duff tormented them, even if he never goes by anyone anymore. He still delivered, he was clever and creative. Keith Andrews amazingly stepped up. Dunne and Ledger were solid all the way through.
Doyle was poor, not for lack of effort. Nothing went right for him, and he should have done better with that headed chance inthe first half. It was a bit of a sitter.

Anyway, very proud of the team who have stuck it to sneering rugby-bandwagon snobs and a cynical media, only to get a terrible bad break. There's no light at the end of the tunnel in international football, it's 10 months unitl our next meaningful game, and even then it won't be THAT meaningful. Our best players are coming towards the end of their careers and there's no real sign of another crop to replace them.

:(

.

If that goal hadn't have gone in do people actually think Ireland would have won this game?

I do actually. I think we'd have easily won a penalty shoot-out. That French side would have bottled the shoot-out in front of their own fans just like they bottled the match.

Anyhoo, fuck hypothesis. It's not helping my crushing rage.

That's a bit embarrassing. Fuck off Ahern and anyone humouring him.
This is the worst of the internet, worse than the child porn.

I don't share your dim view of the future, Moodsy. Perhaps it's the alcohol still coursing through my veins, but if we saw anything last night it's that even the most mediocre bunch of players will play their ass off for Trap. Except McShane. Who shouldn't play for Ireland again.

The clear despair felt by Trap at the end, and by Tardelli, shows that these guys really, really want to win and you could see that in the eyes of the players. I reject the RTE panel's view that the players took it upon themselves to organise themselves and play positively. Do they remember Staunton? Or the Kerr years, for that matter.

But anyway, John O'Shea was actually pretty great. Duff was the best I've seen him in years. Keane was great, as was Dunne. And these guys all have at least another tournament in them.

Even though part of me wouldnt say no to a replay given the nature of it all, Ahern intervening is farcical alright. Not surprising though and it gives him a good share of the headlines to be shooting his mouth off in.

Still in disbelieve though how neither the ref or 2 linesmen saw it, was the most blatant handball since Maradona

There won't be a replay, no point in petitions and all that shite, and Dermot Ahern getting involved is embarassing alright. I wouldn't be so pessimistic about the future of the team, with any luck the likes of Dunne, Keane, Duff etc will be around for at least 2-3 years yet and we have quite a few decent young prospects even if our U21 results are abysmal. Whelan, Lawrence and St Ledger are all 'new' players this campaign that nobody could really have predicted becoming so important to the team, I'm sure there'll be more like that who turn up in the next couple of years.

Whelan was pretty great last night til he went off. I thought.
It'd be nice if he got a transfer to a team that liked playing football.
