Hey, does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to get ram installed on a laptop? Just the price of the actual installation not the ram itself. Or is it wise to install it yourself? The guides on the net make it seem a bit scarry, they all go on about static electricity dangers and other things.

They talk about the static thing just to be on the safe side. There's a slight danger to the actual equipment, and pretty much no danger to you.
But follow the instructions anyway just to be safe.

I threw RAM into the laptop no problem. One of the best investments I ever made.

Cheers, think im going to give it a shot.

static shock builds up between you and the machine. if it was strong enough it can fry your internal parts (the laptop not you :D )

dont go replacing the laptop parts while you're dancing a jig on your carpet at home. place it on a desk/table and stand on a wooden/concrete/lino/tiled floor.
when you switch off the laptop unplug everything from it and before you remove any parts stand still and touch an exposed metal part near the back where you plug in all your devices. this will discharge any static electricity build up and earth the laptop.

if you go to www.crucial.com it has a whole walkthru section by laptop manufacturer and model and will list the relevant ram you need if you're not already sure what DIMM or htz it is. then check out www.komplett.ie for cheap and reliable ram, or for any computer peripheral purchase for that matter.

its all about patience and not touching anything you dont need to. the online how to's and instructions are quite good, espec the ones with nice pictures
