IE problem (1 Viewer)

actually

To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
Quit all programs that are running.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
Shdocvw.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

No luck with this method I'm afraid pete

If I uninstall it do i need to download it again to reinstall- it's free right?

Well that didnt seem to have any affect either- the IE icon is still on the toolbar and the folder is still in the Program Files directory even though I removed it via Add/Remove Windows components

Have you tried to uninstall IE? (Go the Add/Remove Programs screen thingy and choose the Add/Remove Windows Components on the left side. In theory removing and adding it again should sort out those dll probs.)

I've done this and rebooted- twice-- in the dialog box it still showing IE but it's saying it's 0.0 MBs

The icon is still on the toolbar

It doesn't appear to have been removed(?)

You'll need to uncheck the box for IE/Internet Components. Once it's uninstalled it should display the amount of mb's required for the install instead of 0mb (which means it's still installed)

checked or unchecked its just reading 0.0

ie_grab_1.jpg

I rebooted and now it's finally gone-icon not in the toolbar and the exe is gone from the Internet Explorer folder in Program Files

I've downloaded IE8 and tried to run it but it shuts down because it cant detect the default browser

I get this error message when I try to run IE 8

Internet Explorer could not install because your computer failed to install a required update.

When I click 'download'- to manually install it I get the message

Setup could not start your default web browser

I assume because I just uninstalled it?

Any suggestions? Is there any point redoing the run commands as Ive now uninstalled it?

re-install IE6 (backtracking on what you did in the add/remove windows components) and then do the upgrade to IE8. see how that goes.

Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer on this system and cannot continue.

sob

I just uninstalled the version that was on it- i dont know what it's detecting

Sounds like registry dodginess to me.

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry

Thanks

So I've got as far as finding
{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

when i click on it there is a subfolder called Authorized CDFPrefix

Where do I make these changes?

Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry

Right click (I think) on {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} & select new DWord Value.

Will check when I'm at home just in case.

Thanks Pete- i think I'll wait !

Appreciate the help from you and Theseus

Well you're creating a new key so it should be ok. If you were editing / deleting an existing key then you'd be right to be cautious.

k so it turns out there is already a thing called 'Isinstalled'

I changed the value to 0

I tried installing i6 and 8 again but no joy

aargh

ok

one more thing to try

rename the program files\internet explorer directory to internet explorer.old

strange

Cannot rename Internet Explorer: It is being used by another person or program

you sure there's no mention of iexplore.exe in task manager?

have you tried turning it off and on again (and doing this stuff in safe mode)
