IE problem (4 Viewers)

Definitely not running in task manager

I will try in safe mode

where do I start? at the run commands you first suggested?

i wouldn't bother with the regsvr stuff

just go straight for add remove IE again, then if that don't work try renaming program files\internet explorer and run the IE8 installer

Right- I went into Safe Mode and removed IE from Windows components

This time I was allowed to rename the folder (to Internet Explorer.old)

The icon on the toolbar is blank and when I right click and do "Find target" it tells me it can't find Internet Explorer in Program Files

BUT

When I try to reinstall ie6 it's back to telling me ''A newer version is on my system'' so it can't be installed

Where is this 'newer version' hiding ? any ideas?

I did the above- but i forgot to rename the folder first

so now there is a folder called 'internet explorer'( all lowercase) and the original 'Internet Explorer.old'

I'm now getting this popup -which I can't close

ie_grab_2-1.jpg

When I click 'OK' I get this
ie_grab_3.jpg

I can't rename the 'Internet Explorer.old' or 'internet explorer' folders

Should I go back to safe mode and try? and then re-install Service pack 3?

or get a mac?

I appreciate your ongoing help with this

It's not allowing me that option now

It just goes straight to this

ie_grab_3.jpg

I right-clicked on the icon and Find Target shows it is going to 'Internet Explorer.old'

which might be causing a problem?

I've gone to Add/Remove Window Components , clicked Internet Explorer/ OK and restarted twice

Doesn't seem to be getting rid of it

Would doing this in safe mode make any difference?

Back to safe mode, rename that directory back again & uninstall.

At this point i'd be seriously considering a fresh install of windows.

ok -thanks for that

a fresh install would wipe all my files right?

I've copied everything in the C drive to an external drive

If i reinstall windows do I then just copy those files back to the new C drive?

Still no joy in getting Explorer to run

I can live without it but wanted to install the Windows Security Essentials

I assume the fact that IE wont run is an indication that there sis a significant problem with my operating system? Like, I can't just ignore it?

well you'll need to reinstall all your applications...

IE not running would make me think that your earlier restore just overwrote a load of files. not good, so a full reinstall would be the way to go i think.

Well in a last ditch attempt I tried installing ie 8 again--and it worked!

Thanks a million for all the help
