Poor maths may hinder flutter
As many as one in five adults in England may not be able to calculate their winnings for the Grand National, research suggests.
And many people keen to place a bet will not have the necessary level of mathematics to compare odds for the best deal, a survey for the government's Get On campaign found.

The Department for Education estimates that up to seven million adults in England struggle with basic sums.

Similar concerns have been reported elsewhere in the UK - although there is some doubt about the basic research.

The department is encouraging those with problems to sign up for basic skills courses.

Adult Skills Minister John Healey said: "The Grand National attracts bets from people who would not usually place them at any other time of year, and who aren't used to the language and mathematics used by the gambling industry.

"Simple maths can allow most people to work out the winnings that they are due, or whether a 7-1 bet is better than 11-2, but for the seven million people with numeracy problems, these calculations may prove a problem, leaving them at a real disadvantage.

"Of course, not everyone can be a winner at horse racing.

"But improving your maths skills will make you a winner in other ways - for example, research shows that it can increase your earning power by as much as £50,000 over your working life," he said.

The government aims to raise the basic skills levels of 750,000 adults over the next three years.

It bases its campaign on an international study carried out some years ago.

A re-analysis of that study called into question the reliability of the findings.

The new research concluded that the International Adult Literacy Survey "should be treated with caution at national level and more so at an international level."

never mind maths, ye're all dyslexic (?) - the horse was called gun'n roses II
