I play with my fingers also, but only tend to break a bass string if they are quite old....
As far as I'm concerned, you should replace the strings before every gig ... (for Acoustics and Electrics at least)

Do you not find that it leads to a lot of tuning problems?

I'm so lazy and miserly, I usually don't change strings till they
1. break
or
2. start smelling like cat piss

Wooly, what sometimes post here, bought strings on the interweb, I don't from where, but it was something like "BUY 10,000,000 STRINGS FOR $19" or some"I can't believe thats not a rip off!" type deal.
So he gets his big box of guitar strings, and they are short.. like really short... like "they'll never fit on no guitar ever dude!", short. Perfect apart from that.
ha ha ha!
I rarely break strings because I play like limp wristed ponce

Does anyone here fix strings like me? it saves a lot of money!
That wouldn't be that when you tune it open, it sounds out of tune when you play it on the frets, and vice versa, perchance? I had that problem for ages, until I discovered it was just the intonation...of course, I haven't fixed it yet...but it does seem to turn up on G strings a lot, for some reason...Originally posted by sparse
I find it very hard to tune the g string, it seems to be the same on all guitars, it never sounds like you think it should.
