Over the last while I pretty much decided I was gonna definitley go to Dublin after I leave school to go to college. I dont go until 2007 but I decided I am gonna be applying soon so I would need to start finding the lowdown on everything as its a pretty big move.

Is accomadation as killer as people say it is down there in terms of rent? How easy is it to get a part time job such as shop work?

What are the three colleges I have considered like- Griffith, UCD, DCU? I shall be applying for Computer Science I reckon.

Any help is much appreciated.

accomodation wise your best bet is getting a gaff with a few other people. the more people you move in with the cheaper the rent and the bigger the gaff yous can afford. it's also a better buzz living with a load of people, i reckon. beware though, pick your housemates well 'cos they could end up being total cunts. moving in with strangers should be a last resort. if you're going to ucd you could try and get a student residence place. i live in one now but i wouldn't have wanted to live in one when i was an undergrad (plus the post-grad ones are nicer). you have to live with strangers, parties can get busted apparently, but you would be able to roll out of bed and into lectures in the morning.

shouldn't be too hard to get a job but it might be hard to get a job where you're not treated like shit, service industry and all that.

it's miles off though, concentrate on school or there'll be no collage for you young man. :)

Fuck that, go to galway. You can sleep under me stairs and i'll pay you two scrotes a week to iron me kippers and clean me drains. Sorted.

I agree. Fuck Dublin. Go to Cork or Limerick or Galway or Maynooth. Dublin's full of wankers (don't you ever read this board!????)

why don't you knock yourself out and apply for Trinity? DCU and UCD are both miles out in the suburbs and Trinity (or the DIT) is smack bang in the middle of town. Going to college in town is ace, and try for a university or an IT over Griffith college for sure. Dare I say it, Griffith College is a bit of a booby prize of a place to go.

Most universities have a lot of on-campus accommodation too so that's always an option immediately, for first year anyway. You can then make your mates and get a house in 2nd year.

You could think about Maynooth, it has good courses and loads of brand new facilities, but while Maynooth is only about 15 miles from the city centre it's been my experience that students tend to just stay around Maynooth and socialise there. I did a year postgrad there and it was great fun, but I dunno how clausterphobic it would be over the course of an entire degree.

don't know about the other two but dcu has a great rep in the technical depts. probably in others two. i got an m.eng out of there and it's really stood to me. i didn't have much fun there though. totally stiff and work oriented (boo). others i met had a good time on their undergrads though so who knows(?)

ho ho!

Hint: when in Dublin if you ever wanna go to gigs, bring a bag of cans and scab your way in for free. You'll be able to buy loads more cans that way.

I've 2 sisters who work in DCU and it is extremely work oriented, even for undergrads. I mean college is supposed to be about getting PISSED, isn't it?

it sure is.

yeah, fuck dublin. it's much cheaper elsewhere in the country meaning you may not even have to work a job to stay alive and just as much if not more fun. UL has a very recognised CS course. i went to waterford, (which has a really good CS bachelor too) and i had such a great time.

Maybe consider moving around a bit. I know with the cert-diploma-degree system of IT's you can change every year after the first two (assuming you get the cert), would the same be true of the uni's? Mate of mine did two years in tralee (yeah, not the best of starts), then a year in france, followed by a year in limerick. Yeah, not a great set of examples, but i think the idea of trying a different city each year would be class, and you seem smart enough to be able to get the required results (just don't go fucking with the chaplins) (y'hear me?)

ah but Mackle wants to come to Dublin so he can go to GIGZ.

As Kirstie said, don't go near Griffith College if you can possibly avoid it. CS courses differ in their focus from one place to another - Trinity (where the points have dropped a lot in recent years), and probably UCD as well, cover a lot of the theory/science underlying the subject, so that you end up knowing why things are done as well as what things are done. On the other hand, if you're most interested in developing your coding and technical skills and aren't so keen on maths, DIT has a very good degree course. I don't know much about DCU, but it also has quite a good reputation.

I worked with someone who has a CS degree from trinity and he hasn't got a fucking clue.
