I keep getting that on mine too, its a pain in the face.
Also, the gmail spam filter isn't so hot anymore.

Try doing a search for "is:unread".

Gmail is really starting to bug me of late: extreme slowness, forced category shite with the mailbox (i.e. Promotions/Updates/etc) and they killed Exchange ActiveSync for regular *@gmail.com accounts.

(substitute promotions for whatever category).
