They don't. It's only people who are acutely aware that other people are reading the conversation and for some reason they feel a need to clarify their relationship with the owner of the page.

Which just seems silly to me.

I think they're clarifying that they're not some rando blow-in, they have history.
And for most people it's the only time they speak with their cousins. Certainly is for me.

And that they're not hitting on the person.
I can tell a 28-year-old she looks gorgeous or whatevs when she's my cousin.
It strips compliments of anything other than the intent.
 
People addressing their cousins using the term "cousin". Outside of fiction from the 19th century this should not be acceptable.
My niece and nephew call each other Brother and sister.
It was cute for a bit, but it's getting a little Bates Motel,
 
It could have been the start of something beautiful.
How/why do these things happen anyway? I got a friend request off some American pensioner recently.

Like I started a big fight on Mother Jones FB yesterday. Maybe he saw that.
