DIY Guitar Messing About (11 Viewers)

what are the neck intervals based on?

You mean if it’s based on a specific instrument.. not really.,

I looked at ‘commercially’ available microtonal necks.. and took the additional placement up to the 13th fret from them

The specific placements I used an online calculator. Asked for a 1/4 tone placement and copied the ones I needed onto a standard 25.5” scale

I'm very tempted by it tbh - i need to reflect for a day though

for the next build I think I will combine this:

with this...

I have the materials for another hollow body sitting in the shed - the cost of shipping was so much relative to the cost of the timber I bought double.

@magicbastarder - would I be able to avail of your bandsaw skills at some point over the summer to cut another form??

absolutely!

doesn't look much like a guitar to me...
i was just about to (finally) hit reorder on the parts i used for the tele build, on thomann; but the truss rod is not in stock and won't be back in stock for a few weeks. it's the one part i need first to get started again...

Start of the neck block!
You can get them from gear4music as well?

you know, i was a mite tipsy when i posted that and just hadn't thought of checking gear4music. ordered now anyway.
the guitar body i've made for #2 isn't as nice as the first one, but i'll plough on. i've made the damn thing now anyway. it's a dark wood and i've ordered a tortoisehell, and a green patterned pickguard, and will decide on which to use when they arrive.

i might do some bog oak volume and tone knobs, if i have some sturdy enough.

As ever let me know if you need any bits and/or bobs. My biscuit tin of fret magic is at your disposal, and indeed has had a few useful additions since you last borrowed it.

build. To maximise the space in the shed I'll probably have to.

If I had the space I would actually consider some of the woodworking benches you see in McQuillans and the like, factoring in materials cost they are not that expensive.

However - given what I do it would be like having a 6K gibson on the wall that was only used to play wonderwall in the house once a year
if you were still in the market for a bench - apparently mcquillans in blanch are closing, all stock must go. dunno if they're flogging benches for cheap.

the guitar i made a year or two ago, i made life easy with the truss by having it exposed at the body end - easier in the short run, more faff in the long run i guess; but you generally cut the access for it at the head end; i assume there are no har and fast rules about where the end of the truss rod is placed? about where the nut is?

i've also made my life harder this time because in my haste to 'do something' before i got the truss rod, i bandsawed the blank into a rough neck shape before cutting the truss rod channel. i should have cut the channel first, and then drawn the neck shape around it, rather than now having to be much more careful about cutting the channel directly down the middle of the blank.

You definitely have created a problem for yourself to solve there! I always use the square edge of the block as the register for the channel.

Never made a fender style neck, but on slanted headstocks always try to have the end more or less flush with the outer edge of the nut (as there’s a cover I don’t sweat this too much). Would seem to be the same on my factory strat
