Escaped Circus Elephant Chased Through Zurich Streets (Update1)

June 7 (Bloomberg) -- An escaped circus elephant was chased through Zurich city streets for an hour by police and animal specialists before being captured unharmed.

The 26-year-old Sabu took a dip in Lake Zurich and ambled along the posh Bahnhofstrasse shopping street, passing Credit Suisse Group AG and UBS AG banking headquarters, at about 7:30 p.m. last night, Zurich police said in an e-mailed statement.

Onlookers were kept at bay by police as the animal sauntered about the city center near the main rail station, Paradeplatz and the lakeshore. Sabu escaped from her handlers at the Zirkus Knie and was captured without incident near the Talstrasse area of the Swiss financial capital. No one was injured and there was no damage to any property, police said.

Footage from one onlooker showed the elephant walking along the shores of Lake Zurich close to where tour boats dock, police vans trailing the animal at a respectful distance.

His mother must have been filling his head with stories of runcible spoons and pea green boats. Why else would a tiny owl flutter right up to a great big pussycat for a chat?
Onlookers feared the worst as female Asiatic lion Indu eyed the surprise visitor. And they were stunned when the little owl appeared to be brazenly demanding food from the King of the Jungle.

Luckily for the tiny creature, Indu did not show any interest in her unusual guest.
The owl - who had not yet learned to fly - then spent three days in the enclosure near seven-year-old Indu and her mate Mwamba. Amazingly she survived and, after several clumsy efforts, eventually managed to take off and fly to safety.

The incredible pictures were taken by retired teacher Sheila Hassanein, 64, who was visiting Paignton Zoo in Devon. Mrs Hassanein said: 'Someone saw the chick fall out of a tree and it landed right in the lion enclosure. A big group of people quickly gathered round to watch.
'We were all very concerned about the owl as it looks completely helpless in there. It was so tiny compared to the lions. At one point one of the lions went over to it and I felt sure she was going to eat it, but she just didn't seem bothered at all. The staff couldn't go in there to remove the chick so it was in there for three days before it was able to fly off. It was very lucky to escape because I saw a pigeon land in there once and the lion ate it up straight away.'
A zoo spokesman said visitors were keen for the owlet to be rescued but staff could not allow anyone to enter while the cats were in the paddock. He said: 'Tawny owls are common and Asiatic lions are endangered but in this picture it's the tawny owlet that looks to be facing extinction as the lion is a deadly carnivore. Indu is about one metre at the shoulder, about two metres from head to tail and weighs 180kg. A tawny owl chick weighs just a few grams.'
Keeper Lucy Manning said wild tawny owls nest in the tree above the lion enclosure but staff initially thought the owlet had escaped from their owl house. She said: 'One day the chick just turned up on the ground. Indu peered at it for a while but then lost interest. I think it was too small to eat. We believe it got away as if she had eaten it there would have been fluff and feathers. It probably flew off as our bird keepers said it was nearly ready to fledge and an adult was seen nearby.
'The wonderful thing about the photo is the look on the owlet's face - it seems to be demanding food.'

Monkey Phobia Woman Savaged By Macaques

A British woman who went to a Thai nature resort to conquer her fear of monkeys has been savaged by a pack of macaques. Skip related content

Dee Darwell, 56, lost consciousness after the monkeys surrounded her and sank their teeth into her arms and body.

Many of the primates remained hanging from her limbs as she lay collapsed with blood spurting from a "deep, deep hole" in her arm.

She was eventually rescued by Thai boatmen and was taken to Bangkok Phuket Hospital.

The horrific attack happened on Monkey Island near to the popular holiday island of Phuket in southern Thailand.

"I thought I was heading for safety under this rock in the shade, only to cool down," Mrs Darwell, from Peterborough, said.

"I laid the towel down and there were no monkeys in sight.

"The next thing I noticed, this monkey walked up next to me and I thought, oh dear, and I began to stand up to move away.

"Then, the monkey took my wrist and pounced on my right arm, sinking his teeth in and hung off it.

"He wouldn't let go; he was locked on. I was absolutely petrified."

Thai fishermen ran to the rescue after spotting more monkeys joining the assault and began prising them off.

Mrs Darwell said she had agreed to go on the Siam Sea Canoe tour with a friend to confront her fear of monkeys.

Her phobia had been triggered by her father bringing up a chimpanzee which she described as "positively evil".

She said: "I thought, this is it, I'm going to die, I'm going to be savaged by these monkeys - then I went into shock."

Mrs Darwell added: "I wouldn't have got off that bloody boat if the tour guide would have said at all that there was any danger, any risk, even the slightest risk."

Tour leader Mr Yongyut Buasod said: "We can't control the monkeys if they decide to bite someone, that's why we always warn the tourists.

"That day some people were teasing the monkeys. They don't necessarily attack the specific person teasing them."

What were these 2 beautiful creatures thinking when they met?we will never know.but, would it not be nice that, just for once, humanity could think something positive?i would love to think Indu was protecting her.whatever the reason maybe,it is a stunning photo and it brought a tear to my eye and i thought how wonderful Nature can be.Two very different creatures, for a brief moment living side by side, one tiny, one hugely powerful.Perhaps we ourselves can learn so much from this situation, maybe im just a dreamer. Thanks so much to the Lady who took that wonderful picture, and good luck to both Indu and the Owlet.my goodness what a story the little fella can tell his friends up in the nest!!!

Perhaps this little owl survived because it had the wit to woo the lions?
