Hello!

After almost a year in hiatus, Bold Hag (formerly Alpha Relish) heralds the return to Ireland of the Italian no-wave free jazz trio, Zu. Zu last played in Ireland in January 2002 with Guapo and The Jimmy Cake in Whelans. The whole occasion screamed "THIS IS WHAT MUSIC IS SUPPOSED TO FEEL LIKE!"

I cannot emphasise how amazing this band is! Go and see them twist and fly, like whisps of smoke preganant with the spirit of the Mediteranean. The can also resemble a thunder and lightning storm using a rainbow for a backdrop.

Zu tours Ireland between the 3rd and the 7th of November.

03/11/04 (Wed) - Belfast (The Pavillion) w. Lafaro

04/11/04 (Thurs) - Dublin (Voodoo Lounge) w. Giraffe Running, Boxes & United Bible Studies. 6.50 euros.

05/11/04 (Fri) - Limerick (The High Stool) w. Giraffe Running & 22.

06/11/04 (Sat) - Cork (Fred Zeppelin's) w. Giraffe Running & My Remorse.

07/11/04 (Sun) - Early Show (From 5pm): Dublin (Italian Cultural Institute - 11 Fitzwilliam Square) featuring members of the Dublin improvised music scene!!!

This will make you smile!

Boxes

THE STORY OF BOXES

Boxes is mowstly Gaveen and Mawk. Mowstly. They was chums in skool, Gaveen plays gittar n sings, Mawk plays his drums. They from little Ireland town of Tullamore, home of the Dew. They played as Willy Cleary 666 and Fomblin before taking a well-deserved break from music while at their peak. They concentrateded on other things. Pints. Sleeping. TV.

In 2002 they started again as Boxes. Dave Rouse was the bass player, him a good mang, the boys love him platonically. They played loads of gigs and even made a CD, named 'Big ships in the night, small boats in the morning'. The played gigs with The Ex, Nomeansno, Noxagt, Ex-Girl and Morello.

Then a bad disater struck. Dave got a fancy job in the sticks and amicibl.. amamib.. ambic.. Dave left the band, friendly like. The two lads pondered their future. Back to the pints. Eventually decided to continue and in March 2004 found a new lad named Mick.

The chums then played around Ireland in August 2004 as part of Ballroom of Romance Tour, before Mick departed the scene, leaving Mawk and Gaveen to stew in their own two-piece juices, which is where they currently dwell.

Expect a white-dog-shit hot new album in the next, oh i don't know, year or so.

United Bible Studies

Here's the shit on UBS:

United Bible Studies – Stations of the Sun, Transits of the Moon While labouring continues in fits and starts on the impending album for Deadslackstring, United Bible Studies have been happily recording impromtu folky (mostly) improvisations. "Stations of the Sun, Transits of the Moon" is the first collection of these instrumentals to appear on cd-r. It's compiled from 2 sessions recorded the weekends before and after the 2003 Mór festival. This album is nothing like UBS live or the upcoming 'proper' album with songs. It's melancholy and intimate set of tunes. With up to 10 people onstage sometimes, UBS live can be a little overwhelming, for the Stations sessions, the students divided themselves into duos and trios to focus on making short tunes rather than meandering improv.

Originally formed as a duo with an unhealthy desire to emulate the incredible string band, UBS quickly evolved into a collective and laid the groundwork for the deserted village label and events. Since their formation in winter 2001 they have played and recorded sporadically-never settling on one recording method, never settling on one line-up. The forthcoming album on Deadslackstring "the Shore that Fears the Sea" shows a love of the unadorned beauty of Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs and vashti Bunyan as well as the work of Current 93, Coil and sol invictus. Sparse folk sidles up to a more melodic take on free improv and tales of loss and pagan longing abound. If they could exist anywhere, they would be playing in the green man when Sergeant Howie arrives.

Live shows in Dublin, Mor, Galway and Ballymahon have seen them wildly improvise with up to twelve members or play straight trad as a trio. Their philosophy is that all paths are equal, all approaches relevant. Members have often met on stage for the first time. Standard rock instrumentation is bolstered with theremins, fretless banjos, accordions, bugles... whatever comes to hand...

Since their sun worship ritual at The Mór Festival in Tullamore last August, the students have increased their activities. The set, which included radical reworkings of Hellical Rising and The Shore That Fears The Sea has been edging towards a more Pharoah Sanders/ Emperor/ Can hybrid thanks to the new drums and horns helping them to blaze brighter in the northern skye. They've taken this approach on the road throughout Ireland. They brought Black Forest/Black Sea to Ireland and will be joining Sunburned Hand of the Man for an Irish Tour This December.
