While I've an awful fear of this outcome, I do think that A: uk isnt negotiating fuck all, europe is setting terms and that's that. The uk govt are just so caught up in holding power that they are afraid of losing the brexiteer vote so they keep pretending to be very british and in charge and B: I think in reality they are trying to negotiate their way out of it being a think while softening the uk for a second referendum. Like who 'leaks' documents, other than the PR person really?Lads, this is honestly bananas. The English powers that be don't know and/or don't care about what happens to Ireland with Brexit.
I don't see a return to the 1969-1998 malarkey but with in excess of 200 public border crossings, they either have to come up with some compromise (Irish Sea customs border or 32 County Socialist Republic or whatever) or they are going to have to start closing border crossings again.
People along both sides of the border, already a hugely economically depressed area, are not going to countenance local access roads being bouldered and bridges blocked etc as was the case during the Troubles era and indeed before. I suspect if they start trying to "rationalise" in order to put customs checks in place again they are going to have civil disobedience on their hands the like of the water protests or bigger.
Once customs posts are put in place, they become big huge bullseyes for dissidents looking to make a name for themselves and literally no-one either side of the border will really care if they start going up in flames.
It is almost cartoonishly sketchy. The circumstances that the English have engineered due to their own half baked xenophobia have the potential to unravel Ireland's peace process and undo 20+ years of reconciliation and post-conflict development.
They are fucked
Joe.ie might be the most thoroughly depressing thing on the entire planet.
The unseasonable warm temperatures in the arctic are a tad more depressing imo but they've covered that story?
