but from derek's description of what happened, trying to sort it out with andy has lead to the aforementioned "what are you going to do about it?" ... which is typical of andy's attitude in these situations from my experience...
sayin'.
that is the worst thing about this - the 'what are you going to do about it' taunt - guess he did something about it RAD-ALARM, eh ?

lending an amp to a free all-day gig is the sort of thing derrick does. just remembered that i was using his rehearsal space and amps for many a week over the summer for nada. thats what thumped is about, no?

..I think so too..one of the main reasons people kepp comming back here is shared resources..most of it goes on in p.m's and such so it isn't always that apparent ..but if it weren't for thumped we would have not been able to do a number of gigs..as a result it would be shit if people were afraid to lend people stuff or help out if that was the kinda response they got.

me and your sister... sounds like a plan :)
so i guess world hunger is none of your business either, eh?
no... i guess not. so, what's your sister doing later?
heh heh heh

world hunger and broken amps, now THAT'S an analogy

I do care about the principle of lending an amp and getting it back in one piece - when you lent me a cymbal, I would have paid for it if it was damaged. So if that's what you're driving at, then yes, I agree.

my sister sez she'd be into it only if you put out

heh, like you needed to ask :)
my sensitive side lasts from march to august inclusive. presently, i am in full-on slut mode.

hey all

i gladly lent my amp for use at the blackfort gallery's wake gig a few weeks ago.

unfortunately my fond memory of that day has been royally pissed upon by a certain andy from bullets who blew my amp while playing his ahem 'music' through it.

actually it's not so much his actual blowing of my amp that has left me fuming but what he contrived to do afterwards.

as was only right, when he realised what he'd done he offered more than once to get it fixed and lend me a (what he said was a) fender amp in the meantime.he wrote down his details and a week or so later i contacted him to see about getting my amp to him to get fixed/borrowing his.

much to my annoyance, he told me he couldn't afford to get my amp fixed and that he didn't want to lend me my amp firstly cos he was using it and secondly (this takes the biscuit) he didn't want anything to happen to it!

after much cajoling he agreed to lend it to me for a gig. the next day i rang him numerous times to organise the collection of the amp but his phone was off. i left loads of messages telling him to contact me - he didn't.

so i ring him again today (after finding out it's going to cost 130 euro to get my amp fixed) and up front he says yes he knows what we'd agreed but he didn't care he wasn't going to pay to get it fixed or lend me his amp. when asked to justify this unbelievably shitty attitude he back tracks and says ' i didn't break it. it just broke while i was playing through it.'

our coversation ended with him asking 'well what are you going to do about it? sue me or beat me up or something?

i am definately leaning towards one of these options at the moment. which one would you all recommend?

anyway the lesson of this sorry tale is one of these two things:

don't lend gear if it's going to be used by people you don't know

or

don't lend gear if it's going to be used by andy from bullets cos he's a lying prick-weasel who deserves a good kicking.

thanks for reading

derrick d.

First of all sinceI put this on I feel partially responsible,
it was extremely nice of you to lend the amp in the first place
and I think it's a shame that this couldn't have been dealt
with in a grown up manner,
I'll offer to give some money towards this and I'm sure John will
too but I do think that you should have been offered something
towards the damage as 140 is a lot to most people I can see how Andy
would have been put out by it as he is a student but the way
he dealt with it seems to show a lack of respect for other peoples
property.
The gigs were put on to show that not everything has
to cost ridiculous amounts of money and that people are always
willing to give time and equipment on good faith and
to treat other peoples belongings as you would treat your
own.
Lots of people got the use of that amp throughout the day and it was
very kind of Derrick to transport it there and home for nothing.

I also think that Thrilho should shut up it's not him that has to shell out
140 europes for a piece of equipment he needs in order to play
gigs.

Also since there was so many people playing I think it would be nice
if some of them would like to offer to make a donation towards
replacing this between the 15 or so people including myself and John
that wouldn't break the bank and it would put a end to this.
Of course this is just a suggestion.

bingo, there it is...
i still say andy needs a slap in the mouth for his attitude though... maybe i'm just bitter...

I'm sure if Andy has any notion of decency, he would

save up his pocket money and pay his dues....
Fair is Fair

... didn't want to get sucked into an argument between other people but...

To say 'Andy blew the amp...' - what part of the amp is busted? Did Andy mistreat or abuse the amp?

Or was it a case of the amp was maybe going to pack in from wear and tear (as they do..) and Andy happened to be the one plugged into it at the time?

There's a lot of witchy-poo hunting going on.. Was anybody there? Was Derrick there watching Andy abuse his amp? Did Derrick shout 'Stop'?

Too many vague points in this.

Don't mean to get all Bob Geldof about this, hey it's Friday, it's sunny and I'm in love with the world. If this is a resource-sharing community, why not have some sort of a whip around for Derrick's amp?

IT'S A CHOICE WE'RE MAKIN',
WE'RE SHARIN ALL THOSE AMPS,

JUST YOU N ME WOOOAAH YEAH YEAH

It seemed to us that it was turned up full volume and he
was asked nicely to turn it down.
Anyone that was there can vouch that it was the loudest set there
*it was great though*
and a lot of people used it previously, I would like to get this
sorted out one way or another, as it is a resource sharing
thing we were trying to promote and I would hate something
like this to sour peoples attitude towards participating in free gigs
again.

Typical, the little boys squabble all day long, and then the girl comes along and sorts everything out in seconds.
:)

Then again, Andy ain't the only tight fisted/hard-up muso around.. getting even the price of a pint out of 15 of them won't be easy...
:p

I think YOU should shut up.

So far I have just been saying that this dude should have sorted it out like a grown-up. So far, we've been given one side of the story - one that has been presented as "Andy broke the amp", instead of the actual case of "the amp broke when Andy was using it". Two very different situations.

I'm not saying Derek should just shut up, walk away and put it down to 'lessons learned' or whatever - I'm saying that he should have at least tried something more than speaking to Andy what.. twice? (since the gig) before embarking on a whiny name-and-shame campaign.

For the record, I've lent Andy plenty of things, including my amp, and they've all been returned just fine.

Works out about €8 each... that shouldn't be a big ask.

I think it's a fine idea

it's not really witch hunt though - a numner of us were there.
I myself watched with Derrick and with fear as RADs noisefest made tuna melt out of that amp.

anyhoo...
it's a fine idea.

ps - andy's set rocked that night!

*2* pints a head... it's not going to happen Billy-boy :p

Thank you I don't even want to get into who's
at fault maybe it was a bit loud but it could
also have been a case of the straw that broke the
camels back,
as the organiser I would give more towards it
as it is me that asked for the lend of the amp for
the use by other musicians.
But some politeness wouldn't have gone astray in dealing
with your fellow musicians.
