Generally grand, except for the stinky carpet and the fact that they like to keep it as bright as an operating theatre for some reason.

Nothing wrong with reading a book on your own in a pub with a pint in hand. In fact, it's quite nice way to spend an afternoon.

I've done it, but only in pubs frequented by business degree types - Harbour Master being a good example.

I'd never do it in a proper pub.
