I imagine even if you don't believe in any sort of religion organised or otherwise that a period of abstaining from something(s) you like would make you better able to appreciate them in the future. Stop ya being spoiled or what not. I could be wrong though.

Unfortunately the laws of physics force me to abstain from my favourite pastimes all the time - time travel, flying, shooting lasers out of my eyes etc

(p.s. Only messing! I shoot lasers out of my eyes all the time. Can't fly or time travel though)
