Twas the night before 911, and all through the world
Millions of American flags were unfurled
The flags were hung in memory of the ‘Trades’
And in the hope that all terrorists would die of the Aids.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of evil arabs danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘jamas, and I full of booze,
Had just settled down to watch some Sky News.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Osama Bin Laden, fucked up on gear.

None of these poems are even close to capturing the emotion of this tragic occasion as much as SPEAK (I don't want a war), the Hungarian rapper can.

This isn't mine but I think it's quite apt. I mean crapt.

People vote for their own destruction; everywhere
Borks and thieves, bushes hung with union men.
Some bad-smelling, money-mad, worm-headed,
Deep-reaching greediness rules the countryside.
The greedy soul begins to eat shellfish,
The Caribbean Islands, the rain forests, the Amazon.
What will you say now to the God of Love?
The muddy river of Jefferson thickens into Empire.

Look up at the rooftops
When youre walking round
Dont think for a moment
Of looking down

Woah woah, (yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah) for the wings of a dove
Woah woah, for the wings of a dove
Woah woah, for the wings of a dove
Woah woah, for the wings of a dove

Ha-lellujah (lellujah)
Ha-lellujah (lellujah)

Oh, stop it. September 11th was not "the day the Earth stood still," and nothing significantly changed in America or the world as a result. We already had an authoritarian dictatorship in power when it occurred, and they simply seized on it as an excuse for their preexisting agenda. Nor was the event itself particularly traumatic apart from those in Manhattan at the time or the relatives of the victims, notwithstanding the self-indulgence of TV viewers who fancied themselves traumatized.

It's horrible that so many people died at once, but the death toll of the 2005 tsunami was over 200,000 - roughly 100 times higher than 9/11. Does the fact that the 9/11 victims were mostly Americans, and died in the destruction of our two greatest skyscrapers make it more horrific? Of course not. And aside from the initial fears, there was really never any basis to imagine terrorists could pull off something like that again, let alone something even worse.

The event itself was a very extreme crime, but in human terms not so extreme as even a small-scale genocide like the Srebrenica massacre. But somehow 9/11 is supposed to be scarier than Srebrenica because the former involved airplanes, tall buildings, loud noises, and huge scary debris clouds. Well, excuse me if I don't judge history by the values of a popcorn movie. And frankly, the paranoid fantasies and histrionics it inspired or permitted (such as the title of this Wired article) have nothing to do with reality or the event itself. The attacks of 9/11 were horrific, but ultimately insignificant, and only the degenerate self-indulgence of this culture keeps treating it as anything other than an unusually dramatic murder spree.

On Monday we emailed jokes.
On Tuesday we did not.

On Monday we thought that we were secure.
On Tuesday we learned better.

On Monday we were talking about heroes as being athletes.
On Tuesday we relearned who our heroes are.

On Monday we were irritated that our rebate checks had not arrived.
On Tuesday we gave money away to people we had never met.

On Monday there were people fighting against praying in schools.
On Tuesday you would have been hard pressed to find a school
where someone was not praying.

On Monday people argued with their kids about picking up their room.
On Tuesday the same people could not get home fast enough to hug their kids.

On Monday people were upset that they had to wait 6 minutes in a fast food
drive through line.
On Tuesday people didn't care about waiting up to 6 hours to give blood for the dying.

On Monday we waved our flags signifying our cultural diversity.
On Tuesday we waved only the American flag.

On Monday there were people trying to separate each other by race,
sex, color and creed.
On Tuesday they were all holding hands.

On Monday we were men or women, black or white, old or young, rich
or poor, gay or straight, Christian or non-Christian.
On Tuesday we were Americans.

On Monday politicians argued about budget surpluses.
On Tuesday grief stricken they sang 'God Bless America'.

On Monday the President was going to Florida to read to children.
On Tuesday he returned to Washington to protect our children.

A Call To Arms

We heard the mighty roar
Of jets up in the sky
Our military called to arms
Into battle now they fly.

acta7.gif

Our ships upon the sea
Sail off into the night
Our colors waving proudly
Our boys, are off to fight.

acta7.gif

Marching now they go
So proud and tall they stand
Stepping now each as one
To protect our mighty land.

acta7.gif

Men and women side by side
By air or land or sea
Go to fight for each of us
To keep our country free.

acta7.gif

God be with you all
We'll pray for you each day
Until the battle's over
And you're home at last to stay.

"We are hurting, but healing,"
My young son said to me.
"My sweet Lori's brother,
Was on Flight 93."

Dear Mr. Terrorist,

I think by now you must realize that Americans
stick together, that we will not tolerate your
cowardly behavior. Oh yeah, you got a good one
in alright, we call it a sucker punch and although we
were down...it wasn't for long, I think the count
was just seconds!
And if you were watching I'll bet you were amazed
at how fast we were on our feet reaching a helping
hand to those injured. I'll bet you were shocked
at how fast we responded to your cowardice.

Well, Mr. Terrorist we do it a little differently in this
country, we won't sneak up on you with a bomb
strapped to our bodies and we don't bother with
hijacking planes and killing innocent people. We've
looked you right in the eye and told you...
we're coming, get ready.
