Armchair strategist here but, I'd leave the big old warplanes alone. They're not that useful in this drone and missile based conflict. But the Russians wouldn't want to lose them, for prestige or whatever, so they'll spend time and resources maintaining them.

If you blow all those big planes up, the Russians will just go "meh, we've got drones. Saved us millions actually. And all those mechanics, engineers etc. can be redeployed as meat for the grinder".

I think they are upping the ante before or in anticipation of Russia doing so.
A bit like when Zelensky stated Russia broke their announced ceasefire earlier in the year.
As they knew Russia was going to exactly blame Ukraine for that they did it first.
I think anything could happen really but obviously I hope for the best.
