Alan, the number of people who have flagrently broken the rools of this thread is a disgrace. Top 5's have turned into top 40's or top 28's or top 16's.

So it doesn't really matter if it's a discovery or not.

What's your opinion on the Discovery channel?
i like the nature shows
did anyone see the one where they did a show about these two monkeys having sex?
and then the camera zoomed in to reveal it as two people dressed in monkey suits having sex in the wild

no, me neither

Yeah but you've forgotten:

40 = 5 mod 7
28 = 5 mod 23
16 = 5 mod 11

So tis all cool

On topic:

Bach's Concerto for Two Violins
Mahler's Eighth (maybe that was actually last year, but this year I really got into it) - the last ten or so minutes are the most tender, magical, mysterious evocation of love/eroticism *ever*...in fact, it's prolly the best sequence in music *ever*
Mahler's Ninth, last movt
Listz's sonata in B minor
Rufus Wainwright (ta Fidel)

Well for me, this year brought great music by:

The Windshields
Farce & Fortune
The Black Blisters
Umpty 6
Horrible Shit
Melodramatic Egg
Liz Gerstaffen

Oh,,and just tons of other obscure shite that nobody else has heard of.....
:D

futureheads are amazing! but very much a 2003 discovery. i did get to interview barry in july tho, lovely chap.

also, i forgot giraffe running. getting to actually play with those guys, i think this says it all ---> :cool:

Top discoveries 0f 2004 (some new, some not so)

Animal Collective/Panda Bear
The Rogers Sisters
Castanets
Lightning Bolt
King Cobra

Being away most of the year I haven't seen much new locally but what I've heard of those Betamax Format lads make me regret not seeing them.

oh, and cheers to whoever mentioned Owls in this thread and some other one a while back. Just got 'Owls' today and it's the business.

Top 5 i 'discovered' this year?

Hymie's Basement
Animal Collective
Deerhoof (although it seems like years!...jesus)
Ten Past Seven
Joanna Newsom

and to all those who said Owls...i can only wish i heard a band as good as Owls this year.
if only i could hear Owls for the first time...

Make Believe come close....but still no Victor Villareal.

or Victor Villa-UN-real as he should be known .|..|

live, Owls were one of the most boring bands I have ever seen.
damn, i got that record (the orange one?) this year from murder city and it's cool. joan of arc played belfast last year but it was on the same night i did black eyes, ah well i heard they were a bit boring/weird, maybe like owls too then. still, good record.

i'm listening to Here comes the Indian by Animal Collective.
didn't like it at first, but now i think it's brilliant... Two Sails on a Sound is a savage track

ah now, if you're gonna introduce finite field arithmetic don't go leading people astray! it's

40 mod 7 = 5
28 mod 23 = 5
16 mod 11 = 5

and the modular and equality operations aren't commutative

i'll get my coat

one of me bandmates has been enthusing much about animal collective to me recently, i really liked the one track he played me - perhaps i should check out more.

also deerhoof, given that everyone else on the thread seems to have discovered them this year....
