I use the "new posts" page and "Mark forums as read" button to cut out almost all wading around in subforums looking for stuff to read. I'd recommend this approach.

You read the threads you're interested in, click on new posts and then mark the rest of the unread threads that you're not interested in as being read. Works for me.
