And Thriller: The Double Kill

Bored playboy Hugh Briant discovers a thief in his home one evening while his wealthy wife is asleep upstairs. Seizing the opportunity, Briant blackmails the man into murdering his wife in exchange for a large sum of money and no questions asked. The deed is done, but things don't go as planned and it transpires that a series of clues have been deliberately left that clearly point to Briant's involvement in the murder. As his world begins to crumble around him, the cocksure Briant finds himself on the receiving end of the assassin's own blackmail attempts. Enraged, he swears vengeance on his tormentor, but fails to grasp the true nature of his identity.

Black Box Germany (Black Box BRD)

Black Box BRD steps back into German history, showing the Federal Republic of Germany of the 70s and 80s. The country is polarised due to the power struggle of the German state and the ‘Red Army Faction’, and thus on a consistent brink of civil war. Society is torn, the fronts are irreconcilable. The life stories of both the former terrorist, Wolfgang Grams and former CEO of the Deutsche Bank, Alfred Herrhausen are tragically linked to this era.

enduring love

good stuff - a lot better than i thought it was going to be, seeing as it was done by the same dude who did the extremely shit notting hill. psychological thriller kind of thing. one of those films where you go back to watch the first few scenes again at the end to try to figure out just what the fuck happened (and it does have a great opening scene).

some of the characterisation was weak: the whole idea of one single character being simultaneously gay and a stalker and mentally ill and religious and mullet-hairstyled was a bit much to take. maybe they wanted to get as many persecuted minorities as they could into one character, seeing as everybody else in the film were such resolutely comfortable-guardian-reading-middle-class types.

the story pretty much relies on people's inner demons taking them over, which means a lot of scenes of people looking troubled and anxious, which doesn't usually make for compelling viewing, so the plot sagged quite a bit as it went along.

Went to see The Intruder on Friday.

Loads of really nice shots in it etc. but the plot was all over the place. A lot of people walked out of the film, which is unusual for the IFI.
Saw a trailer for a new Cronenberg film which looks decent.

the IFI's computers were down so they had to give us cloakroom tickets with the name of the film written on the back. Weh weh weh.

In other news, Turtles Can Fly is now available on Amazon.com. Fantastic film.

Balagan

"Khaled, a Palestinian whose family has been living in the country for eight generations; Madi, a Jewish woman whose father survived Sobibor destruction camp; and Moni, a religiously observant Iraqi Jew, together founded the Akko Theatre Centre. From their personal experiences they have developed a play that challenges the way we think about the Holocaust and contemporary Israeli experience through powerful, sometimes shocking performances."

Thriller: Won't Write Home Mom - I'm Dead

American Abby arrives at a hippy commune in England in search of her boyfriend Doug, but the cousin who she has not seen for fifteen years insists that he was never there. Abby nervously reveals that she has a psychic link with Doug and that he sent her a telepathic message, but the commune members ridicule the idea. When they conclude that her boyfriend must still be due to arrive, she asks to stay and is taken in by the eccentric group, one of whom appears to be possibly dangerous. While staying at the cottage, Abby repeatedly hears Doug's disembodied voice calling her name and even imagines seeing him surrounded in flames. Fearing for her lover's safety, Abby becomes convinced that he has met with ill fortune and that a recurring mental image of five elm trees holds the key to his fate.

Quite slow-moving and not that good, one of the weakest efforts.

Five Easy Pieces. One of the benefits of having to work weekend night shifts is that suddenly the scheduling of great films at 2am seems like genius.

Jack Nicholson is feckin magic in that movie.

Dawn and Day of the Dead.
The Sci-Fi channel actually had something good on for once, even had introductions by George A.

Thriller: The Crazy Kill

back to form - great story

Prestigious specialist Frank Henson and his wife Hillary become held hostage in their country home when Henson opens the door to escaped convict Garard and his sidekick Filton. Garard, a notorious killer, agrees not to harm the couple as long as they co-operate, but then an unwanted guest in the form of journalist Tracy Loxton arrives. Loxton claims she had made an appointment to see the Henson's collection of poster art weeks beforehand and, despite the best efforts of the doctor, insists on seeing the house. An elaborate deception then ensues, with the unbalanced Garard reluctantly playing the part of the Henson's butler while they wait for the girl to leave. Yet Garard is perhaps not the only killer present in the house.
