joyous mountains of nowhere
Starting a course in Newport, South Wales in September and know nothing about Wales. Never been there (except for my interview) and never been around that part of England like Bristol.

The course is documentary photography so I'd like to do as much research of the surrounding area to get some ideas for projects. Bringing my bike over as well so cycling trip info would be great. Also city info: Bristol, Cardiff etc.

Thanks in advance.

I went to College (UWIC) for a year in Cardiff last year - really liked it. Found it a lot cheaper than Dublin. Not been in New Port though.

oddly, though I've never specifically intended it, I've been to wales shitloads of times. mostly out in the middle of nowhere however. I've never been to cardiff for instance. my sister lives in cardiff; don't think she's too mad about the place to be honest. although, it generally gets good reviews from most folk. if I'm talking to her I'll ask her if there's anything decent to do about the place. I've driven the M4 from pembroke to england a fair few times... one of my favourite spots along the way has to be port talbot, purely because it's one of the most remarkably horrific places I've ever laid eyes on! steelworks, giant flames shooting into the sky, bleak terrace housing. bladrunner shit...

I've gone camping here and there. nothing to write home about. found some fairly nice beaches along the west coast. wouldn't have a clue where they are now.

don't know much about the north; I was in st. david once, which I think is supposed to be the smallest city in the uk. it's basically a village with a cathederal. um, what else...

if you like rollercoasters and stuff (I don't) there's a place near enough to pembroke called oakwood. went there one day, got bullied by my mates onto some particularly scary rides, arms went numb, thought I was going to have a heart attack, left. someone was killed off the last ride I was on a week later. never again!

eh, this isn't very helpful haha! my sister is in direland for easter, I'll ask her if she has any tips. should be seeing her during the week.

Whats to see/do in Cardiff? Gigs/music scene? I'm only about 20min by train from Cardiff.

There's a place Called BARFLY that does a lot of Live music and another Called THE WELSH CLUB that does life music/dj stuff too -indie/punk/metal.

Seeing as I live in Wales I thought I better stick in a reply. I've not been to any of the cities down that way but if you want nice beaches check out the gower peninsula. Out by St David's is also really nice.

Thanks everyone.

Plug port talbot looks like an industrial fun park or smut. Mary Poppins on the chimney kind of vibe!

Ferox I was reading an article on venues/clubs in the guardian on saturday. I'll put them up later and you can tell me if there shit or not. Unless you have bad taste then let me know now!!

Yeah I'm prolly not the person to listen too - I was pretty drunk that year too :)

The Guardian article said these places were great in Cardiff:

Chapter venue and cinema was cool.
The Norwegian Church?? sounds great
Spillers Records

Do they tell the truth Ferox?? or Broken Arm??

to be honest the place is a bit of a shithole politically and economically but there is good stuff going on all the same and there is a growing vibe about the city - i haven't been here that long but the the amount of times i hear people telling how bad it was 10 years ago........

Gig wise - for me the place would be in a heap if it wasn't for the Lessonnumberone guys - http://lessonnumberone.blogspot.com/

and the forecast lads
http://www.myspace.com/slakwazzman

the venues are usually
http://www.clwb.net/main.cfm?language=english
http://www.thepointcardiffbay.com/
http://www.coalexchange.co.uk/
http://www.barflyclub.com/cardiff/whatson/WhatsOn.aspx (never been - always emo kids outside)

pub wise - to be honest I go to the locals mostly (such as The Claude) but the other pubs I like are Buffalo http://www.myspace.com/wearebuffalobar (expensive and the crowd is changing to more posh office types.....),
the pen and wig,
Chapter,
the vaults,
the goat major (sunday pints),
the cottage (when the folks are over),

film/theatre wise - Chapter is the ticket http://www.chapter.org/ It has nice food and great bar. Just pick up the monthly magazine as there is all sort of things going on.
There are also some community theatres going on

there are some listings magazines - Buzz magazine and Kruger http://www.krugermagazine.com/

as for newport.
I'm not sure. All I know is a bunch of anarchists and that there is a good few hardcore bands.

I've seen some gigs here a year or so ago - http://www.myspace.com/le_pub , like USA is A Monster and that type of thing

as for cycling, camping etc there is so much of that shit. west wales, midwales, cardigan bay, rosilli bay etc etc. tons of amazing countryside

bristol. really close to you. loads of deadly shit going on there.

any more questions just ask.

i have to say the lessonnumberone guys manage to put on really cheap gigs

i.e.
Wolf Eyes/Consumer Electronics/Somatic Responses/Trawsfynydd Lo-Fi Liberation Front
It'll cost you: £6.50

and I'm only joking about it being a shithole.

Thanks Broken Arm. Getting a Wales guide book today and doing an obscene amount of research. I'll post up what I find out.

Oh forgot about Chapter - yeah that was cool - just there once kind like a cross between IFC/the project art and the DRC (showing my age there)..

The Norwegian Church?? - worth a visit but it's kinda touristy as is the whole bay area. Basically they pumped billions into it but there seems to be little local employment there...

Weekend can be a bit rough in tough but prolly no worse than Temple..

match days days/nights are a nightmare..
