milk production requires calf production - animals must be artifically inseminated and impregnated to produce milk. it's obvious if you think about it: lactation requires the existence of an infant. a mother produces milk for her offspring. this is why cows are repeatedly artificially impregnated. the mainstream dairy industry is deeply fucked. however, milk is very tasty. what a conundrum.

vegetarianism is a classic pressure release valve, while we determinedly grind everything to shit with our real day to day actions.

That's a very sweeping statement to make. There are veggies and non-veggies who try to make a difference to the state of the planet and the level of wellbeing for humans and animals in as many ways as they can, and veggies and non-veggies who don't.

I don't buy into the all-or-nothing argument. Even making a decision not to buy factory-farmed meat, dairy and eggs makes more of a difference than doing feck all.
