Vegans (1 Viewer)

Yes, I think thats it. Also just designed for folks who are trying to cut their meat intake, rather than ethical vegans. I try not to be too judgey about these kinds of things, I'm far from a perfect vegan, but KFC...

aye, its a bit 'the clue is in the name'

i'm not as strict as i used to be:
i never eat food at fast food places BUT a few years ago i started
buying drinks there sometimes -
so that i can use the toilets or sit there when it's raining.

i bought my friend chips at Supermacs a few times. their chips are
vegan but the oil is also used to cook meat in.
so they have NOTHING vegan on their menu.
i haven't eaten chips since the 2000's.

i've also given up trying to find vegan alternatives to medicines.
in 2017 it got to the point that i agreed to take one very small tablet
per day rather than the liquid medication (which was the only vegan option).

tablets are almost always gelatin but the active ingredients are not an issue.

for years i had terrible problems sleeping while on Risperdal (anti psychotic)
but now i get about 6 hours good quality sleep, which has transformed my life.
i'm now sorry i didn't do this sooner.

since veganism has become mainstream in the last five years maybe
we can have gelatin removed from tablets some day ? (ala Guinness)

also i hate leather chairs but now if there's nowhere else to sit...

(pubs that don't stock fruit juice are another pet hate of mine)

I was just kinda thinking about this because I saw a tweet talking about leather belts and stuff.

I know obviously leather isn't very vegan at all, but the alternatives in the mass market at present are horrific one time plastics that animals will still be sifting through their digestive systems in 500 years. Would wool / leather in the short term obviously not sit well but considering the biodegradability long term sit better ethically.

I'm fully prepared for having missed the point here btw.

no way i am going to wear wool or leather BUT you are probably right.
i go through lots of runners but a pair of shoes might last me the best part of a decade.
the soles of shoes are always plastic anyway. plastic is huge problem regardless of diet.
canvas belts are a good option.
EDIT: and canvas shoes !

Sounds like you're doing fucking amazing to me, to be fair. I have a similar attitude, I know it sounded like I was implying otherwise with my KFC comments, but I also agree that doing your best is the best you can do. I have a fair few things that toe the line and aren't fully vegan, most of them falling under the annoying gellatine category, too.

For example, for my art I shoot film. It makes me sad to think about but I've yet to make the switch to digital. I also take medication wit gellatine in it. I've stopped beating myself up about them, too, but I do hope that we get other options, because neither of those things specifically need gellatine. Film is unlikely to pop up with a vegan alterantive, as a dying industry, but who knows, the hipster effect could throw something interesting up there too?

like electronic gadgets usually not being 100 % vegan there
was little you could do about photographic film back
then (and nothing aside from not owning a camera).
straight away when i heard about digital cameras i realized
it was a game changer in that respect.

my favourite vegan disaster was condoms.
vegan condoms didn't exist until 1999 !
poor old vegan police didn't like being reminded about that.

another one is vinyl. vinyl is vegan but beeswax is used to
make the master discs (look it up).
this may have changed more recently but that's how it was done.

in the 1990's, pre the internet, anti technology had a lot going
for it. a lot people hated CD's 25-30 years ago and making
music on a computer was often seen as only affordable to
certain people.
i never realized then how cheap all this would be in the 2000's.

so unless you want to live a primitivist lifestyle there ain't that
much you can do personally.
i buy all my vegetables in places like Lidl.
if i still went to a local Fruit and Veg shop it would cost twice as much
..... i could go on.

So much of being a vegan seems to be about the fun scavenger hunt aspect of it.

I was at a wedding once and we are sitting at the table and people are looking at the menu in this plush garden/forest type location. Someone asks about vegan options and this lad just leans over and says 'here's a fork, go out side'.

Well that's just mean.

every time i go out for a meal i'm dreading having something
with coleslaw, eggs or mayonesse (sic) put in front of me.
has happened many times.

mayoneese isn't worthy of being spelled properly -
one of the most disgusting things i ever tasted

This is my greatest food anxiety. Not only because I'm vegan but because I have a really horrible fear of mayo. But also because, vegan. I really also hate now how all vegan places in Dub that do the junk food vibes SLATHER everything in fucking gross vegan mayo. Its like theres no creativity, just fake clicken covered in garlic vegan mayo, cop on.

i have a very limited taste palette -
i hate strong tastes like garlic or hummus.

anyway i love chick peas and when a local cafe finally put something
vegan on their menu in last few years i tried falafel - i thought it tasted awful.
how could someone do that to lovely chick peas !

Two points-
1) i only had the cafe's word that the food was vegan.
i usually eat salad at restaurants or buy half a loaf of bread if i'm stuck
when i'm out - this isn't much less healthy than what most places serve up

2) i think food should look like it did when it came off a plant or out of the ground.
because then i can tell what is and also it tastes better.

i simply can't accept the idea food is an art form or cultural thing.
in ireland it had no such status when i was a child.
in NO WAY am i a food connoisseur - and i'm proud of that !

anyone ever see any of Rose Elliot's cook books from the 1970's ?
she pioneered the long over done genre of vegetarian cook books.
the ingredients for her recipes are so simple - i assume that was all the
ingredients that was available at the time.
later veggie cookbooks are full of recipes with 'WTF is that and where do i get it' ingredients.

my attitude to cooking is VERY utilitarian -
i cook veg and beans only 'cause i have to to be healthy. and nothing else.

You must be the only person to dislike garlic.
