Vegans (1 Viewer)

Not loving food sounds really depressing to me, no more than when I hear people say they don’t like music. It’s a whole world of sensory experience and cooking is so satisfying.

I agree with food being deeply entrenched culturally and an outlet for art.

It is also kind of a lifestyle thing too now (witnessed by the number of 'foodies' on tinder) which I guess is the era we live in but also a bit last days of the roman empire so I get why someone would be more comfortable outside that part of the culture.

I was well into my 20's before I realized that inedible shite like broccoli could actually taste good when cooking it stretched beyond "boil until wilt." Being a foodie is indeed a terrible idea, just as being a gamer is terrible, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy food of computer games, gnome sane?

Curious about that myself presume it's not the actual Impossible stuff that's still banned in the EU for now.

i started typing a post a couple of days ago but didn't finish it
so here it is now :

Rose Elliot - can't recommend anything by her as i've never cooked
a recipe out of a cookbook in my life. don't know if any of her
books are vegan ? was just making a point about limited selection
of food available in 1970's.

Garlic - if it tastes so great go eat 200 g of it in one go and let me know
how you get on !
unfortunately it takes like gone off veg to me. i know it's how nutritious
it is but i find it overpowering.

comparing preparing / eating food to music is inane to me.
there's an element of an interior designer saying -
' this house says nothing about you !'
(yeah - 'cause i don't care and ain't got much money !)

i have records from about 70 different countries so i'm been
fascinated with the outside world from a young age.
i look down my nose a lot at Ireland actually.
despite never really having gone anywhere i've been in contact
with people outside Europe since the pre-internet days.
music and letters/emails are a much better way to find out about
the world.

i'd rather go walking, be online, read, write letters, listen to records
(hard to do in a kitchen) or visit friends than spend too much time cooking.

when i was younger i could go out for 10 or 12 hours
and eat nothing until i came home again.

the elephant in the room for me is that since i was 20 in 1996
i've have been on anti psychotic medicine constantly.
i gained 20 pounds in the first few months alone.

i had been vegan for 3 years by 1996 and could eat shite
like bread and orange juice as much a wanted with no
problems until then.
i'm about 5"11 or 6 feet tall and weighed 11 1/2 stone until 1996.

THE REST OF THIS POST HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH BEING ON
MEDICINE THAT CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN AND VERY LITTLE TO DO
WITH BEING VEGAN :

the biggest disability i have is being hungry and overweight.
NOT any mental problems.

being hungry was unknown to me until i was 20.
i can't accept this (even 23 plus years later).

i have to try hard with things i didn't even think about pre medication.

this is what i ate yesterday. it was a lot better than normal
(i ate 800g of Oatmeal a few days ago !)

- focus on the amount of food and how long it would to EAT it.

i weighed 12 stone 12 pounds Sunday morning and 13 3 lbs after tea.
i also did a 7 miles plus walk.

Sunday 12th January food checklist :

2 litres WATER
200ml APPLE JUICE

300g OATMEAL w/ 15 g FLAXSEED
400g cooked SOYA BEANS ( weighed about 170 g before soaking/cooking)
1 1/2 tablespoons OLIVE OIL
1 big Gala APPLE
200 g SPINACH (uncooked)
4 COURGETTES (uncooked. before peeling weighed 250g each)

4 Bowls* COOKED MIXED VEG w/:
mostly BROCCOLI, CELERY plus CARROTS, SPROUTS and GREEN BEANS.

i always eat the stalk of the Broccoli which is crunchy when sliced thin.
the bowl was a ceramic dish the size of a kids plastic lunch box.
in total the boiled veg was 75-80% of a 7 litre pot crammed with veg.

usually i eat Grapes, Rice Dream (milk substitute) and cook some Spinach
(which is a good source of calcium but only when cooked) but i didn't have
any of that yesterday. (i only got the spinach after i finished cooking).

so i had eaten well and ate a bit less than normal too.

BUT THEN....
i finished eating at 6:30 pm. but by 11:30 pm was feeling hungry again
so i went to bed.
i got up at 1:45 am to go to the loo thinking :

" i'm hungry...... i'm hungry...... i'm hungry........ i'm hungry......."

so i cracked and ate 200 g oatmeal w/ water and 150g soya before
going back to bed.
so that's my reality.

NOTES:
- eating lots of green veg and drinking mostly water is an essential part
of weight control. i try to make the excess food i eat all veg which is very hard.

- unfortunately you need to eat A LOT of veg to fill you up BUT it does work.
despite eating a lot if you try this you will lose weight.

- weight loss TV shows are very dishonest about the amount of veg you need
replace high calorie food. usually they deliberately don't mention it.

- substitute meat for Soya and milk for Rice Dream and apart
that a meat eaters version of this is the same.

- i cannot imagine put sauces etc. on this amount of food and i have no desire to.

- i eat COURGETTES because they don't need to be cooked, can be eaten quickly,
and fill me up. no other veg i eat is as filling.

- it takes a long time to eat veg compared to cereals, bread, fruit,
beans etc. it's so easy to go for a quick fix.
being hungry makes me feel agitated and can happen very quickly.

in summing up i spend enough time on food already without
going for a foodie version that i'm quite happy without.

Jesus Christ lili, this went from heartfelt to the ravings of a madman via a simple typo.

Listen, its clear that food has lots of different meanings and represents different joys and struggles for everyone. Food is something I really love, now as an adult after years of disordered eating in my teens. I associate it with de-stressing, winding down, turning off my very speedy brain and yes, doing something creative. Food as fuel vs Food as Love/life/creativity/culture is down to your own unique circumstances and relationship with it, which is also cool!

fair enough jonah.
also if i was a meat eater or enjoyed food more, i would be more overweight !

having to look at what's in everything you consume is the main
reason veggies tend to be healthier.
asking how something is made and where it comes from is always good.

True, having to look at your calories all the time has got to be really draiing.
