Reformer, who will pay for street lighting, sewage and primary school education in your new utopia?

Commercial interests and the markets, dummy!
If you find the road you're walking on is too dark, stick a euro in a lamp post!
If you got the shits, I'm afraid your PooCorp bill is going to go up this month!
If you don't earn a decent wage your kids are going to be illiterate!

Yeh, you're going to need to pad out those answers a bit more buddy.

The Beacon specialises in 'weight loss' and cosmetic surgery and isn't the type of place you bring your granny if she slips in the bath.

Seriously reformer, if you're taking the piss you're doing a woeful job!

Here, lads, arguable the worst president in history is in charge of the US, abysmal popularity, the economy is looking fucked, they are fighting two wars and possibly loosing both.
And, Obama, who is arguably one of the most charismatic candidates ever, who has had one of the most impressive primaries campaigns ever, who is up against an ancient notorious asshole.... is just managing to keep up with him.

What the fuck is wrong with these people.

Obama's primary campaign was well-funded and he was fighting against a candidate that shot herself in the foot more than once.
He's a first-term senator and one with a somewhat vague message.

And McCain is a respected veteran that was considered as a running mate for John Kerry. Ancient notorious asshole doesn't quite cut it.
For a Republican he has fought with his party more than most and for stuff like his efforts with McCain/Feingold you have to give him props. He may yet pick a Democratic VP.
He is not a religious nut like Bush and no matter what the Dems say, it would not just be more of the same.

That said, I'm voting for Obama. It's just not black and white, if you'll forgive the pun.

You flew too close to the sun my friend. You're obviously taking the piss just to get a rise out of folk.

not completely i know far too many long term unemployed people who take great joy in claiming the dole every week and make zero effort to find employment, six months should be plenty of time to find a job after that start making progressively bigger cuts till they end up with nothing.should sort out that problem.
strange guy-sorry i dont have all the answers yet,im working on it though.

That's the problem, all of us here at Thumped DO have the answers, with the clear exception of yourself.
But in between traffic jams, work and casual sex we only have the time to publish our answers periodically on this site.
It's up to everyone else to act on our answers.

Your strict dole rules work great in theory but will only be effective for people who are happy not to work and
make no allowance for people who genuinely can't find work.
Under your scheme they will end up hungry in 6 months.
Back to the drawing board...

Alright, fair enough, I'm being ridiculous.
It just amazes me how Obama nationally, at this point, doing so badly.

Who is voting for McCain? Where the fuck are these masses of people? I dont know anyone that is convinced about him. McCain's polls stagger me.

But, again, its back to relative realities. My little fucking sphere of reality not intersecting with this massive subset of the US population.

They tend not to live near universities.

once or twice I've had a look outside though.

Seriously like, even old school, hard core, Republicans All Their Lives, Christian middle aged / old upper middle class white people, are fucking horrified with what is going on.
Even they are thinking ahh for fuxake lads. This had gone beyond joke now.
That's what I'm trying to say.
The people that I thought the Republicans relied on as one of their big solid bases seem to be defecting at this point.
At least that what it looked like.

Apparently not though.
Or have they recruited some other mysterious source of votes?
I just dont understand the polls.

Not sure it's a blatant lie in the way the swiftboat thing was. More some guys opinion based on experience.

I remember some murmuring a few month ago about McCains unwillingness to release his medical records - the implication being that he actually suffers from PTSD and was very mentally fucked up after his experiences in Vietnam.

And the temper thing seems to be true - he is renowned for having a pretty vicious temper.

I'm sure he was really fucked up after Vietnam, but he wouldn't have been diagnosed until at least the 1980s because before then, there was no recognition of PTSD. So in some ways, he might have been even more fucked up because there wasn't really an official name, nor would everyone have agreed such a thing existed.

My suspicion is that the unwillingness to release his medical records is more to do with what it would reveal about how much fucking money he's got for health care, which would undermine his 'get another job' argument for
those who don't have any insurance.

The problem is that we're lucky his politics stink. Because if they didn't, we'd be faced with a very difficult challenge: can we say with confidence that it's okay to NOT elect a president whose mental health issues are a direct result of military service of that country? We're going to end up dealing with this issue soon enough.

We've probably had a clinically-depressed president already, but now that people are more likely to be diagnosed with mental health issues, in the next twenty years or so, the first generation of overdiagnosed and overmedicated kids will be of presidential age.

That discussion, when it happens, is going to bring a lot of uncomfortable issues to the fore, about how we *really* feel about mental health.

McCain has access to forms of privilege that a lot of PTSD sufferers, especially war vets, don't have. So he might not have suffered as much career-wise and indeed, his temper may have got him some respect in his circles, being seen as a 'straight-talker'. Not that he hasn't suffered because I'm sure he has, but maybe he doesn't recognise the full spectrum of effects of PTSD because it hasn't prevented him from accessing power or pussy.

strange guy-sorry i dont have all the answers yet,im working on it though.

this isn't very convincing after "3/4 years studying every economic theory".

not a schniff of markey-failure, non-excludability, schumpeter, neo-schumpeterian theory, neo-classical growth models, appropriability, or anything..... :)

That's the thing, you live in New York right, the city electing Rudy and Bloombery aside I'd imagine it's fairly safe for the Dems in the general election.

.

It was because his health problems are myriad.
He has a bucket load of conditions that he's getting treatment for and he's on lots of meds.

He did a 'document dump' in May.

Jon Stewart covered it earlier in the year.

arg, I know, but... I know a load of people that have voted Rep all their lives, and I think all of them, like every one, has defected and said that the party no longer represents their interests. These are old people, cops, Christians, Catholics, rich lawyer types, blue collar types, all sorts of people. I mean, its a fairly large set of people. Most of them are not NYers.

All of them have said, no way, not again. And I hear about this happening all over.

But the polls stay 50/50. Totally solid.
What is happening to compensate for this loss?

Either :
this is not really happening, its just I am seeing a weird set of Republicans;
or it is happening but this "type" of Republican doesn't account for many votes,
or the polls are just wrong,
or there is some new source of Rep voters.
This is what I am wondering.
