Arra, it's a part of what-it-is-to-be-American, innit.
There's the obvious "communing with nature by killing some of it", and "the protecting your homestead" arguments. Also, we tend to forget that lots of Americans live amongst bears, wolves, mountain lions, rattlesnakes and other dangerous animals.
But also, there's the idea that Americans keep guns so that if they feel they are being oppressed by their government, they can form a militia and rise against it. Just as their forefathers did in the Revolution.
An NRA type would therefore argue that public gun ownership is a preventative measure against any government attempts at oppression in that it ensures that the government remembers who's in charge. It acts as a check to government power and control.
So gun ownership is an essential part of American democracy.
