Thumped Netnography Study (1 Viewer)

Hi guys,

Firstly thanks to everyone who gave permission for me to quote them or gave any feedback. I have put together a sample of some of the findings I though may be of interest to you. It is a little rough as I still working on putting together a final report but part of netnography also includes presentation and feedback on findings. I just popped in the ones I though you may find interesting. Please excuse any typos or formatting issues. So let me know if I am completely wrong or somewhat right. Feel free to PM if you like.

Thanks again,
Brian

Thumped.com – Insights From Netnography

Since December 7[SUP]th[/SUP] I have been actively analyzing threads and users of thumped.com as part of Netnographic study. The main focus of the study was to examine thumped as a “neo- tribe” (Shankar and Elliot 1999 as cited in Cova 2002) as opposed to a traditional segment and to explore the correlation between the link, or shared passion that holds the community together and consumer behavior or lifestyle decisions.

Thumped.com as tribe

It is common practice for marketers, sociologists and anthropologists to segment groups by homogenous persons – i.e. people who are not connected to each other but share the same characteristics – for example 25 – 40, Living in Dublin, Self Employed. This group consumes but is not capable of collective thought or action (Cova 2002).

Thumped could of course be broken down into a loose demographic but another approach would be to consider Thumped as a tribe. Cova (2002) describes a tribe as “a group of heterogeneous persons – in terms of age, sex, income etc – who are linked by a passion or shared emotion; a tribe is capable of collective action, it’s members are not simply consumers, they are also advocates”.

Therefore, Thumped.com could be considered a tribe that is held together by a passion for independent music and creativity. This is the “linking value” (Cova 1997 as cited in Cova 2002) between members.

There is an inherent lifestyle choice that comes with this support of independent artists, promoters and labels. That is one of getting involved and advocating for this scene because without this, it wouldn’t exist.

Thumped.com as Working Consumers

There is no marketing budget that sustains the D.I.Y. music community. It exists and thrives soley on the participation, consumption and advocacy of its members. Tribe members are producers and consumers (Cova 2009). Cova, (as cited by Cova and Dalli 2009) states that “tribes will become the new marketers of the 21[SUP]st[/SUP] Century” when referring to the fact that “certain tribes form their own market and engage with one another in the production and consumption of goods and services”.

Thumped, established in 1999 is certainly ahead of the curve in this respect. Members produce and consume. A member may buy the record of another member’s band who in turn may attend the show of another band and then act as an advocate on the board for said band because they played a great live show.
Similarly artists share demos of music on the board and receive feedback from members that may shape the final recording of a song.

Thus, we have the working consumer (Cova and Dalli 2009) whereby members are not merely buying “product” but are shaping and advocating the “product”.

Thumped.com Consumer Profile – Does the D.I.Y. ethic transfer?

Netnography is “primarily concerned with the examination of textual discourse” (Kozinets 2010). These findings are gleaned from threads directly relating to consumer goods and services with aim of establishing what type of consumer the average thumped.com user is and to examine if there is a correlation between this and the ethos of the board.

Profile

  • Good value for money is key but not at the expense of inferior service or product.
  • There is certainly support for independent businesses as opposed to chains however as above, this support is hinged on the quality of service. They will not support a company simply because of its values.
  • There is no “fanboy/girl” mentality when it comes to brands and members are quick to point out any flaws even in their favored brands. The attitude seems to be “If it is not fixed, I will look elsewhere”
  • They are not impulse buyers. Careful consideration, comparison and discussion goes into any purchase decision and input from other community members is held in high esteem and often acted upon.
  • They have no problem spending money on something that works and will cause the minimal issues rather than a cheap fix.
  • Definite culture of trying to fix a problem independently either through the learning of a new skill or by presenting the issue to the community in the hope the “hive-mind” can help.
In summary users of the forum are smart consumers not given to impulse buying. They will research before they purchase and value functionality, reliability and excellent service. It is apparent that there is a link between the ethos of this site and consumer and lifestyle habits namely the willingness to fix something themselves and support for independent businesses.

A note on Tribalism and the Migration to Social Media

As the linking value, independent music is intangible and not tied to one place, the advent of social media and similar platforms has caused a migration of sections of this tribe. Before Myspace (This was the start of the migration), Facebook, Twitter etc. there was no alternative for community discussion around independent music and thus thumped.com was the natural home for this tribe.

Bandcamp, Soundcloud and similar services all have Facebook apps allowing users to host their music on their band page. Users can share and advertise to a far larger community. Twitter lends the ability to follow a conversation with millions of other users through a #tag. As the online experience becomes more “social” the ability for users to browse other users photos, information and habits it is natural that a proportion of the community will move. Indeed, from threads on social media on thumped.com it is clear that many active members are now engaging with one another on social media. Whilst this is by no means the death of message boards it is inevitable that regular usage will more than likely drop due to social media.

Thumped needs to get out more

Thumpeds threads in many cases probe the desires of it's members. "The Bargains someone Should buy", "Lovely Saabs", the entire guitars and amps sub-forum and several food threads are evidence that while the members of thumped may see themselves as intrinsically linked to a DIY underground movement or in a way members of an anti-capitalist or value or quality aware consumer group, it's users still harbour the desires to own expensive "asspirational" items beyond their means. Viewed in a purely consumerist way this presents the thumped user as a high functioning self aware type who can aspire towards capitalist consuption of goods but can also place those desires aside in favour of pragmatic spending.

However on a psychological level it is the Horn thread that tells us most about the thumped users.
Here the thumped users who seemingly have endless time and resources to dedicate to websites, television and movies post their highlights of these media with regard to attractive members of the opposite and often the same sex. It seems that we can draw several conclusions about the users of Thumped from this thread

- Everyone on thumped is a virgin
- Thumped members are absolutely delusional, they live in a dream world in which rich glamourous successful attractive people would ever consider getting down and dirty with the filth that populate thumped
- Everyone loves tits even girls love tits. Deadly.
- Rampant homophobia is more than likely covering up the fact that about 90% of posters are gay as christmas.
- Fucking hell Christina Hendrix

The Horn thread has a sister thread named "real life people I have the horn for" in this thread the thumped folks post information about people they see in their day to day lives and are secretly attracted to. Here they are revealed as impotent pathethic swines who hide behind their anonimity making pining emo comments about people they know are way out of there sexual league. In a very real way it's like Woody Allen directed a Twilight movie in which the Vampirey lad was trapped in a room with a computer and just typed endless "I'd die for you" garbage while wanking and avoiding sunlight then making quips about how shit Yuck are. What's most frustraiting is that the Thumped posters can't manage to conceal a camera well enough to secretly phoograph the real life "horns" and post pictures so that the entire group can pass judgemnent and have a right good fiddle.

Conclusions that can be drawn from the horn threads are as such.

- you are gay
- you'll never get a ride ever
- maybe you would if you left the house more and stopped listening to Joanna fucking Newsome
- Animal Collective are fucking shite
- Maybe you'd get a ride if you had a better personality
- Try being sound and showering more
- Washingcattle is a creep steer clear ladies
- Jill Hives is probably a ride or a man it's hard to say.
- A/S/L
- Wanna Cyber ?

Ha, nice. A far mor accurate and honest appraisal.

Does an undertheorized multi-perspectival sociological ventriloquism lead to a potential mannerist deformation in representations of social existence?

Well, does it?
