Also The Fall - where to start? I have a really old video of them performing songs like Edinburgh Man and Been a Lotta Wind Now (uh) on an MTV session and they rock too. Just never followed them up for some reason. Is there a recommended starting point for a band with such an extensive back catalogue?
The Fall have been my favourite band since I was around 14/15. The album that got me into them was This Nation's Saving Grace back in Christmas 1985. While the back catalogue looks daunting it's worthwhile noting that they have only released 24 studio albums. Live albums and compilations bring the total past 80.

Up till this year there wasn't a career spanning compilation - but this changed with the release of 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong - a double CD of some 38 or 39 songs. If I were you I'd get that and see what you think. Most of it is pretty accessible. I saw it in HMV for €15 last month but price may have reverted back to the €20 mark. If you like that then I would recommend getting the following studio albums

Hex Enduction Hour (1982 - album #5)
Grotesque (1980 - album #3)
Slates (1981 - album #4)
This Nation's Saving Grace (1985 - album #9)
The Real New Fall LP (2003 - album #24)

now what you have to watch out for is the particular version of each album.
Sanctuary are re-releasing the back catalogue in stages (deluxe expanded editions with bonus tracks, remastered sound etc). The stuff is being released in pairs - so far
Live At The Witch Trials and Dragnet (1979 both - albums #1 and #2)
Totale's Turns (1980 live album) and Grotesque (1980 - album #3)
Live In London 1980 and Slates (1981 - album #4)

Hex Enduction Hour, their finest, ahem, hour is due after Christmas.
Do not buy the above albums if you see previous editions of them - shoddy sound quality etc. Vinyl wise you'll pick them up second hand.

The band moved to Beggar's Banquet in 1984 and stayed there til 1989 so Sanctuary do not have the rights to this material. So you will have to make do with average-sounding CDs pressed up and released c1990 for this period.

That Moulty song freaks five shades of fuck out of me. But I like it :D
yeah; it's a good one. It is taken from the Nuggets box set. The drummer of The Barbarians was called Moulty and he had a hook for a left hand. But when he heard the song had been released he went apeshit and chased the manager of the record label (Laurie records) around his office, breaking copies of the single over his head.

that was probably delta 5.. i put the wrong version of the song on the cd. the 7" of anticipation is amazing. then they camped it up with the worst production ever for their album!

sorry for the let down
wasnt sure about the name, so I had to go check, but NO! I really like that one!

I may be chastised for this but its that jasons basement one, I just cant get the image of Tia Carrere 'wailing' out of my mind when I hear it.

the first track is fucking killer, as is that other creepy one 'I think about you all the time' (proper name?) all in all A savage comp. Anyone who wants it, PM me!

ah its the gossip you dont like... i really like her voice.

that last pere ubu song (codex) creeps me out every time i hear it. yet its strangely addictive.

.. i only managed to fit in the first couple tracks on hermie's tape this morning. sounds great. ill get to the rest later!

nlgbbbblth made me a compilation tape about 5 years ago which i still have somewhere, which is fantastic. my first introduction to quickspace (or quickspace supersport, as they were then), as well as loads of other stuff, including the a and b sides of the first arab strap single. also fantastic.

anyway, i'm working on mine now, so i'll post up a list when all is ready.
