ribbon mic question (1 Viewer)

recorded some vocals with AEA R92 Ribbon before and quite liked it.. very warm and 'tapey'

a bit fragile build on it though.. dunno how long that would last in my clumsy hands..

was actually leaning towards a beyer.. what's the difference between m160 and m130 do you know?

beyer rule

m130 is figure-8 and m160 is hyper-cardioid I think.
Ribbons are lovely on some vocals alright.

The M160 is about the most established ribbon for the price.
They're known for being pretty durable too.
€444 on Thomann? Wow. They've dropped in price.

i know its not any use to you but i can vouch for the royer r-122 being super amazing. again, i was using it on a session that i was PLAYING guitar on rather than recording. i was playing guitar and we had an R-122 on a '79 fender twin. possibly the best guitar tone ive ever encountered. how much are we talking for these guys?

actually, shit i just had a look on thomann. FUCK. next.

The R121s are just as good as the 122s as long as you don't have a preamp with a pussy amount of gain.
They are super mics. Lovely on drums, rooms, amps and most acoustic instruments. Killer on fiddle/violin etc.

My go-to on guitar amps is a Royer and a 421 or U87.
I usually end up using one or the other, mind you.

Another one for 121, have a pair and the are fab, like Red tape said you just need a beefy preamp...
I havne used these but read some reviews of Golden Age ribbon mics a while ago and SOS reckoned they punched above their weight.... more in the budget too

You can't beat a pair of Coles 4038s.

A bit pricey maybe.

Same applies as regards tons of clean mic gain.

Switchable impedance for any ribbons on the preamp is a must, imho.

Most modern preamps weren't designed for the low impedance of ribbons. The UA and some of the fancier Focusrites have switchable impedance.
