Problem with CD drive on me laptop (1 Viewer)

This is a weird one. My cd drive is working, has all the most up to date drivers yet on some CDs I get a nasty noise from both importing and playing directly from the CD. This happens on both itunes and windows media.

Seems to be quite random but no matter what certain CD's will have the noise and others will be perfectly fine. The noise is a sort of crackly white noise about as loud as the actual music.

Any ideas good people of Thumped?

Happens to me too.

I think it's that the hole in some CD's is off centre slightly.

Sometimes if you reseat them it goes away - but it's a horrific noise isn't it.

Ohh hang on, you didn't actually say it was a mechanical noise did you?

No it's a sound problem. Fuzzy white noise on top of the track being played but only on certain CD's. Very odd.

Here's a shot in the dark, can you see any dust or dirt on the laser?

If there is be careful of cleaning it.

Yeah checked the lens and it's fine. Games work fine, DVDs work fine. It's just the occasional cd, but always the same ones.

Have you tried ripping the audio from the CD to a wav or MP3 to see if the sound is there too? Do they work fine in a standard CD player?

Yeah it's the same on the ripped mp3s when I listen back to them. Could be some kind of copy protection going on, but some of these CD's are over 10 years old. Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin is one of them, yet Zeppelin's Mothership collection released last year does same. Seems to be completely random.

Yeah all the dodgy CD's work fine, plus I have already imported them on another PC.
