Letterkenny's James McGlynn. He'd be seen on the street every, was pretty fond of spending a lot of hours drinking and shouting, but he didn't really shout at people. Kinda poetic at times. Never knew him personally but was definitely part of the fabric of the town when i was there. This short film showed me a whole side to him I'd never been aware of.

Im really sad about this.

Jim McLean (1937- 26 December 2020)

Dundee United manager 1971-93 who turned what was the city's second club into
1983 Scottish Champions and 1984 European Cup Semi Finalists and 1987
UEFA Cup runners up.
Even at in those very different times this was remarkable stuff rivalling the achievements
of Brian Clough's Forest and Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen or Wimbledon in terms of
transforming the fortunes of unheralded clubs.

In recent years it was claimed by the son of AS Roma's former president that the referee
of the 1984 European Cup Semi Final second leg was bribed by his father.
Dundee United lost 3-0 in Rome (and lost 3-2 on agg) the picture of McLean and his
assistant Walter Smith walking off pitch ignoring Roma staff shouting in their faces said
a lot about the decency of the man.

in 1987 he took DUFC to the UEFA Cup Final beating Lineker's Barcelona in the QF
1-0 in Dundee and 2-1 after going a goal down in the Camp Nou.
twenty years earlier DUFC had also beaten Barca home and away in the UEFA Cup
and Dundee United are the only football club with a 100% record against Barca.
in the Final they met IFK Gothenberg another small club who made it big and lost 2-1 on agg.
the second leg came only days after one of five Scottish Cup Final defeats.
that time they lost 1-0 to St.Mirren.
after playing 69 matches they ended up with nothing in 1986-87.

after being after being at the helm of Dundee United for 22 years Jim resigned
in 1993. he was already a director of the club and later became Chairman.

in 1983 McLean had been on the verge of taking the Rangers job but changed his
mind. During negotiations McLean had insisted that if he took the job he could
sign Catholic players which the club had agreed to.

As a person Jim was a hard man who only ever drank a sip of whiskey after the
club won the 1982-83 League (for the cameras).
Jim had been suffering with dementia.

It was quite depressing following this on ig following various people who were quite close with him posting about him going missing for a week before his death was confirmed.

Don't know much about his post-Beck career, but he co-wrote Forcefield one of my favourite songs ever. Not a Beck superfan, but randomly punted for One Foot in the Grave a few years back in a Disk Union. On cd. Great discovery - file under outrageously good two quid purchases.
