Outgoing links and Search engine placement (1 Viewer)

On my website I have a page with a large number of relevant links most of these sites do not have a link back as they don't have links pages. I just read that this might negatively affect my search engine placement is this true? What I did to solve the problem was hosted the links page in some free space provided by my ISP - this sound like a good idea?
