Also the [Wikimedia] Foundation is big now. And I think that some people, even if they don't admit it, hold some jealousy and resentment that there's this fancy office in San Francisco.
FWIW the fancy office is gone - since the pandemic pretty much everyone works at home, so when the lease came up for renewal (sometime in the last year) they let it lapse, and moved Legal (the only people who need an actual office) to somewhere much smaller. Haven't seen the new place, and I guess it's unlikely I ever will

I dunno if you could call the Foundation "big" - it's doubled in size since I started in 2017, but still there's only 700-odd people

The US has had a budget deficit every year since at least 1980 except 1998-2001. Their current deficit is $1.7 trillion. In that context it's not surprising that a lot of them hate Big Government ... though in fairness if they were willing to pay a bit more tax the deficit would be lower I guess

It sort makes more sense to run a deficit.

Just not spending it on nukes and militarising your own police.

I've been thinking about that stuff the past few years in the context of being someone who might not get a 'retirement' per say.

On the other side of the coin we don't have mercantilism running at the level we used to and live in a world market and everyone soft quitting or whatever just probably means accepting a crappy economy for 30+ years.
 
Do you want to read a 150 year old article about the modern cat, and it's "moral and intellectual furniture"? Of course you do.
There are many other such flourishes and quirks in the writing, as you would expect.
