Unless it happens when you're turning, it's probably the timing.

Should be easy enough to remedy.

Its a mini right? The timing is chain driven, its your fan belt, you should change it alright but a macgiver fix is a little tolka powder on it should help for the time being

In the case of it being a timing belt, change it immediately. Its something that can actually make a whole engine implode in an instant. I don't buy cars that dont have chain driven timing.
