I’ve sent them a very polite email basically saying it’s not possible to use that in a year so they’re either incompetent or negligent.
Said we’re getting married next year and that I’m inconsolable thinking we may have to cancel because of their failures.
Mentioned that it’s 2 weeks from Christmas and if someone else had received that letter, the consequences could have been disastrous and that would be on them. That has been going through my head, there’s a hell of a lot of families living pay heck to pay heck and that could have pushed someone over the edge is they were in a dark place already.
I also said that we’re going to the media if it’s not fully resolved by COB Tuesday.
I put both our phone and email addresses and our work email addresses too as back ups. We both work in places that are pretty high profile, so I hope they shit themselves.

They’ve gotten back now saying there’s a possibility there was an incorrect meter reading (singular, that’s one hell of a misread if it’s nearly 19k) and we’ll get an update Monday.
 
We’re still arguing with them a bit but they’ve admitted there was a problem with their systems and it would be a normal bill and not a crazy insane one. They tried to take the total out of our current account so its a bit worrying that the bank never flagged it with us that they tried to take nearly 19k off us three times. If it was our savings account then it would have been a nightmare getting it back and we’d have been screwed.

That would effect me for years (but also would bounce in any case). File literally everything they say to you, use emails as much as possible, avoid phone calls that are harder to refer back to. I'd run ins with *internet provider* this year, i got every refund possible and it was mostly because i'd worked harder on admin than they had.
