Jaysus cycling! (6 Viewers)

yeah, could just about do it I think - problem is road narrows significantly past a certain point (at which point the lane disappears), so I'm not sure how people would feed onto the contra-flow lane
Yeah.
I mean, at some point it would be nice if make a call to de-prioritize cars. I lived in dublin for a few months there, the idea of traveling anywhere by car was dreaded. I think I only ever got in the car to truck kids around, it seemed grim. Way worse than 20 odd years ago, something comparable to midtown Manhattan traffic where you'd really only brave it if you had to physically get the car through there on the way somewhere else. Tram lines aside, cycling in dublin was enjoyable. The bus network in Dublin seemed pretty good too. The current car load doesn't look like it's sustainable, but we'll see I guess.

this shit annoys me.

the figures at hand do *not* state that cyclists and scooter users are 11 times more likely to be seriously injured than motorists. it states that cyclists *who have been injured*, and who have gone to the IRB, are 11 times more likely to be seriously injured than motorists who have (allegedly) been injured and gone to the IRB.
it'd be great if the IT sent their journalists and subeditors on courses about basic maths and logic.

also, and may god strike me down for possibly suggesting a slur on motorists.
many motorists go to the IRB because the insurance companies have refused their personal injury claims. in these instances, they probably cannot claim serious injuries as these would be obvious. so a proportion of the claims of minor injury going to the IRB are bound to be fake.

i suspect that the proportion of cyclists claiming for fake injuries is lower.

Train was packed this morning.
The guy was like 'we can't let the bikes on'
I said 'kick somone with a car off instead'
within 30 seconds there was enough space for me.

Also did my fastest 10kmh since records began trying to catch that train, which was then late.

just found out that timmy mallett is a keen long distance cyclist. i don't know if he takes his mallet with him.

These 'achievement' cycles - obvs he's a media guy and has to make it an event - but i suspect there would be days of that cycle that would be shit.
like people i know who cycled the length of portugal as an achievement. the did it inland and didn't see sea till the south coast effectively. like you'd want to go to nazaré and watch people fall into the water for 30 mins at least. it does somethign, but it misses 'the thing'.

he does seem to have set out to enjoy himself to a certain extent. he's doing them on an e-bike now,

he uploads a lot to youtube, e.g. one here from tory island.

I'm getting very close to getting a fitness tracker or smart watch.
I have never used one before.
My usage case is entirely to work with strava as all going well i've a lot of train/tour/train/tour coming

googling it brings me between Samsung // Google Watch // Garmins

Any of ye's using any of the above for this specific purpose, anything i should avoid?

As always, i'll be on the budget/refurb market.

I think Garmin is the gold standard here. I used their bike computers for years and am on my second watch.

I have the instinct 2. I paid the extra 50 euro to get a solar charging one, but its not worth it. Battery life is great anyway. Its not touchscreen so takes a little bit of getting used to, navigating your way through it.

But it auto uploads everything to Garmin Connect and Strava (if you set it up to), so ticks that box.

The most basic Garmin will do the above though, so no need to go splashing out if your needs are relatively straightforward.

Look at Polar too. I used them back in the day. They were big players in the market and got pushed out a bit. It looks like they're putting some really good stuff out lately. I'd deffo consider them next time I'm getting something.

I got a bit enthused last night and ordered a refurbed garmin watch
i ordered a solar one but in my case it was a tenner +/- on the next refurbed one - the solar might be vaguely worth it in my case because i've a few days in mediterrainian wilderness on the horizon - the main thing is to take my phone out of the workflow.

one thing which is minor but irritating is that when you finish your ride your garmin may tell you you averaged say 25.2km/h.
and then it uploads to strava and strava says it was 24.8km/h.

I've a notion strava is more accurate in terms of taking out the not moving parts of the average.
I've a slight half ambition to hit 40 mins on my commute - I've done it before on a road bike with a small backpack, I want to do it on the considerdable heavier mule with the panniers and all that though, just because.

Back at that time of year where i threaten myself with buying a road bike again and doing TT's locally. the local sect announced a nice graduated TT series (7km, 14km, 30km, 40km max over a few weeks) but the dates are bad for me. I might have a go next year, or just try one of the courses some evening to see.
