iPhone (2 Viewers)

yeah, figured it wasn't going to be that straight forward.
i checked out a couple sites selling those dummy sims, seems like
an option, but obviously its not ideal.
thanks for the info anyway, ill keep looking into it.

thats deadly news!
the process still sounds pretty complicated to me though. things like
jailbreaking it first, will that be easy enough to do?
and "This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07
baseband or earlier", i have no idea what that means.
so do you reckon someone who's not particularly tech savy could
manage it?

Nah its not too bad.

Jailbreaking is the process of taking the official apple firmware and patching it. Its very easy to do.

Once the firmware has been patched you can then update as usual through itunes and then you have an extra icon called cydia which allows you to download loads of 3rd party free applications. You'll want this.

This doesn't unlock the phones carrier though. Just the phones software.

Unlocking the phone for use with different networks means patching the baseband which is like the phone internal modem. Its whats the nerds have finally just managed. Very complicated apparently.

The last official apple update (2.2) contained an update to the baseband that has not been unlocked by the nerds.

So you're looking for an 3g iphone with older firmware basically.

Got an iPhone last week. The integration with the Mac and iLife stuff is amazing. It's a bit like when OSX first appeared in that it was only with the 3rd version that they nailed it, there are a few obvious improvements to be made here too. For for the moment I'm delighted with it.

I hate these things with a passion. I was sitting around drinking pints with a bunch of people at Christmas and every one of them had one of these f-ing things. Each was constantly looking and doing stuff on the phone. Head wrecking. No one needs to be connected to the internet and such THAT much.

have mine a couple weeks now too. took a little bit of getting used to
but love it. only issue i've really found with it is the battery life, another
day or two out a full charge would be nice.

Was on tour with a friend's band in the shtates a few months ago and one of the lads had one of these. He'd managed to get pandora for it and hooked it up to the stereo in the van. Can irish ones do that? I'd come home for that reason alone. Greatest invention in the world if you ask me.

Oh and his battery life was a bit pooh so he brought it to an apple store and they stuck some firmware on it that gave it days of battery life, just like that.

iPhones don't bore people, people do.

Anyone use apps/games much? I'm using these at the moment.

Appstore:

Palringo - great IM client.
eBay - Good for browsing items quickly
Google Earth - works well
NYTimes - Handy nytimes reader
Edge - Clever 3d block puzzle game
Rolando - Great game. Similar to locoroco.
WordJong - Addictive daily word puzzle

Jailbroken apps:

dTunes - mp3/video downloads. Bit like limewire. Very illegal and a bit buggy but deadly.

PdaNet - Allows you to tether iPhone to laptop to use 3g connection.

BiteSMS - Replacement for crap sms app on iPhone. Allows forwarding, sending contacts, landcape view etc.
