I was going to post the story about the British crocodile expert and the dogs in the shipping container but thought better of it.

Do yourself a favour and don’t read it.

so I started reading a bit about the algae situation on lough neagh...

and then I ended up reading about how lough neagh is actually not even a public lake, legally. it’s mostly owned by this guy, who is the earl of shaftesbury

Nicholas Ashley-Cooper, 12th Earl of Shaftesbury - Wikipedia

and he inherited the lake, and lots of other stuff, from his father, who was this guy

Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 10th Earl of Shaftesbury - Wikipedia

the father was a member of the house of lords but only ever managed to give a single speech, which was bonkers

“Building a society the Shaftesbury way is not a matter of imprisoning a presumed evil spirit of mankind. It is a matter of beauty and truth. Both Goethe and Voltaire were influenced by the 3rd Lord Shaftesbury. The former particularly reminded us that we must cultivate our garden. We all know about large prize-winning marrows, but are not succulent baby courgettes more perfect? Small is beautiful too...”

anyway, a few years after giving this speech, he was murdered by his wife, a former Tunisian sex worker and playboy model, who was in the process of being divorced by lord shaftesbury for a younger moroccan exotic dancer. the guy had a type.

the murder was actually committed by the wife’s brother, who threw the lord down a mountainside in the south of france.

at the trial, the wife attempted to call george clooney and bruce willis as character witnesses — both men declined.

she was released from jail earlier this year, and is still going around referring to herself as the countess of shaftesbury.

(I hate to have to link to the daily mail, but there doesn’t seem to be any other source)

Ex-escort who ordered murder of the Earl of Shaftesbury keeps title

so... I am hereby beginning the campaign for Jamila M’Barek, the countess of shaftesbury, to be given full legal ownership of lough neagh. she worked hard for it.

IIRC there's a great story about a firebrand priest basically forcibly unionising the fishermen of lough neagh and protecting their ability to fish for eels there - and doing it sustainably too. i think i have a book here somewhere which goes into it.

I was stood on the shore of Lough Neagh this very weekend. The Bann pretty green around Toome. Water didn't seem too strange at Ballyronan.
