i generally wander off out of range if there are other people around and i want a fag in public.
i'm very conscious of it now after years of the smoking ban. i remember once before the ban on a college field trip i smoked constantly through an evening recap session in the lecturer's chalet...he was a smoker but about 80% of the other people there weren't, must've been horrendous. it didn't even occur to me at the time.

nobody made me smoke but the easy availability of my mother's duty-free stash and the fact that both my parents and almost all their friends smoked openly arguably made it both likely and understandable that i developed the habit.

no difference between outside/inside in terms of normalising smoking in the eyes of of kids unless you're happy with kids thinking smoking is o.k. so long as you're outside.
