Electric Picnic 2012 (1 Viewer)

I've never paid for EP and I don't plan on starting it now. Hopefully I'll be in Spain for all of September anyway and with better weather. After Jeff Mangum next week, I can't think of any band that would pull me in enough to bother. Not unless Talking Heads or The Smiths reformed.

THE CURE are expected to be announced as one of the headline acts for this year’s Electric Picnic festival. The line-up will be announced at midday and will be keenly anticipated given there will be no Oxegen music festival this year. The Cure’s heyday was in the 1980s and early 1990s when they were established as one of the foremost goth bands. They have been around in different guises since 1976, but lead singer Robert Smith is the only constant.Icelandic group Sigur Ros, a festival favourite who headlined in 2010, are also expected to make a return to Electric Picnic. They have been on hiatus for the last two years, but have already announced festival dates in the UK, elsewhere in Europe and Japan. They will be releasing an album in the coming months. The festival, which tends to attract an older demographic than other rock events, takes place as usual at Stradbally House, Co Laois, from August 31st to September 2nd, with a capacity for 30,000 people. In the absence of Oxegen, it may attract some younger fans this year. The 21-year-old Yorkshire singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is also expected to be announced as one of the acts today.Sheeran has had a rapid rise to prominence in the last six months with the success of his debut single The A-Team and his debut album +.Elbow, Bell X1, The xx and Orbital are also rumoured to be lining up for this year’s Electric Picnic.Early-bird tickets for the festival sold out before any act was announced. It is anticipated that there will be day tickets for the final day of the festival.

One Day Like This…

One weekend like this a year sees us right! Electric Picnic goers will revel in the powerful anthems of ELBOW this year as they head to Stradbally. Since forming in 1990 Elbow have worked hard to earn the success and critical acclaim they have today. The five piece have been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize three times, including last year for their current album, ‘Build a Rocket Boys!’ and have been awarded two Ivor Novello awards. Most recently the band have been given the honour of writing the BBC’s Olympic theme. Throw those curtains wide, Elbow have arrived!

Renowned for unleashing unbridled joy to any festival, one of the best loved dance acts of all time ORBITAL will be bringing along spanking new music from their first album in over 8 years, ‘Wonky’, to Stradbally. The pioneers of dance, Paul and Phil Hartnoll aka ORBITAL live show still resonate as gloriously as they ever did, and show no signs of abating twenty years on.

HOT CHIP, return to Electric Picnic for picnickers’ pleasure with their energetic, exciting and unpredictable live set full of pop wonderment and dance floor mayhem. 2012 will see the band reunite after a year of working on various other projects and start work on new material, all ready to reveal at Electric Picnic this summer.

THE XX made their debut appearance at EP back in 2009 when their eponymous Mercury Music Prize winning album shot them to the forefront of the indie pop scene. Judging by the taster of the first demo they’ve released from their new album, ‘Open Eyes’ the three piece are set to continue on their path world domination.

THE ROOTS have become one of the best known and most respected hip-hop acts in the business, with both Spin and Rolling Stone naming them as one of the greatest live bands around. After incredible success at the 2011 Grammys, Philadelphia’s THE ROOTS latest release ‘Undun’ suggests the band that are returning to their own “roots”.

2011 was the year for lego loving ED SHEERAN as he exploded onto the music scene. With an eclectic mix of acoustic, rap and folk sounds, he has developed a niche for himself in the industry which he tests and pushes with every new release. Most recently Sheeran triumphed at the BRIT awards scooping the title of Best Male Artist and Best British Breakthrough Act

If it’s music you want you should go to…

Possibly the most recognisable and admired Irish folk artists CHRISTY MOORE has enjoyed a lengthy and accomplished career in music. Indulge in the Craic agus Ceol that will be on offer at The Picnic when Christy blasts out the old favourites – Lisdoonvarna, Joxer goes to Stuttgart, Ride On, Ordinary Man.....

Their third studio album ‘Skying’ was met with glowing enthusiasm from critics and fans alike. Magnetic, enticing, hard to ignore - The Horrors will ignite a thrill inside you, whether you want them to or not.

One of the most eagerly anticipated albums of 2012, AZEALIA BANK’S ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ career has been set to meteoric since her track 212 went viral last year and she topped the NME Cool list. Having given a taster of her live show to Irish audiences earlier this year, the New York rapper will be proving that you can believe the hype.

‘Cause this is what you’ve waited for..

Revel in the charming resonance of Academy Award winner GLEN HANSARD’s solo show. The singer-songwriter has captivated picnickers in the past under the guise of The Swell Season and The Frames. 2012 will see his first foray to Stradbally as a solo artist. Hansard’s solo album is set for release later this year.

One of the most indellibable figures on the world hip hop stage over the last twelve years, ROOTS MANUVA, will be performing tracks from his brand new album ‘4everevolution’ as well as classics spanning his impressive career. Encompassing hip-hop, reggae, dub step and rap, distinct and original, Roots Manuva is not one to be missed.

Homegrown talent BELL X1 last performed at EP in 2009. Oft referred to as Ireland’s most likable band they have received an laudable 3 Choice Music Prize nominations and 5 Meteor Music nominations in a career that has spanned 13 years and 5 albums. One of the hardest gigging bands around, they make a welcome return to the Stradbally stage.

GRIZZLY BEAR are back to work for 2012. The Brooklyn quartet acclaimed 2009 album,’Veckatimest’ which found them diverse fans in form of lay-Z and Radiohead declaring them as their favourite band. Grizzly Bear have just announced that they are to head back to the studio and the road this year and picnickers at Stradbally are one of the few lucky ones in Europe that have been chosen as one of their destinations.

Watch ALABAMA SHAKES rock out on stage and prove why they have been hitting all the rights notes in the blogosphere and on critics’ lists. Last year they were named among 30 must see acts at CMJ and declared number 1 new act of 2011 by Paste Magazine. Now despite having only a four-track EP to their name the Athens group have appeared on Conan O’Brien and recently signed to ATO Records. We wait with bated breath for their debut album ‘Boys and Girls’ and their debut Picnic performance.

Dance music supremo JOHN DIGWEED first came to promenence in the early 90s championing progressive house in the era of the superstar DJs. The fact that he is still around is proof that his popularity has transcended the invasion of bubblegum pop into the clubs around Ireland and the UK. His efforts transcend DJing alone and he is as much a producer and a promoter, and is sure the get collective feet moving at Stradbally.

LAND LOVERS have notions on being a clever, nuanced pop band with immediate attractions to thrill and details to discover. Their second album, ‘Confidants’, topped numerous best album lists for 2011 and they were hailed as one of the Breakthrough Acts of 2011 by Irish Times. Jim Carroll called Confidants "a rare gem of a record" where you'll find "meaty, magnificent, haunting worlds of domestic wonder". Mark Land Lovers down on your must-see picnic list now.

Meanwhile, in the murky shadows of the woods in Stradbally, an old friend peels a few leaves off his forehead and flicks a caterpillar from behind his ear, and recalls some distant promise to try harder... its the captain of the SALTY DOG STAGE,stumbling into the lengthening Spring days with his flies undone and wondering how the winter was so effortlessly squandered. The proud shipwreck -- French in origin, French in odour -- stands tall among the giants at Electric Picnic, promising to round up the fringes of society and give them stage to play on. Sea shanties from pub-tanned codgers, bluegrass at the whim of corn-nibblers down from the hills, blues solos from tinny-swilling double bassists with bockety eyes, and the occasional cracking set from a confused rock-star kidnapped from the main stage and spirited into the forest... these titans will walk upon the timber deck of the boat, to the roars of the Salty Dog's devoted followers, get swallowed into the over-eager fog of dry ice, and have the time of their lives.

Was just starting to think maybe I could afford to go this year and the line up is shite.....

Went one year (2006 maybe?), never again. I'm not a camping person. And yep, the line-up is pretty shite & Irish people get way too drunk at festivals.

EP should get rid of all the MINDFIELD/BODY&SOUL/COMEDY TENT/TRENCHTOWN/HIPPY bullshit & stick up some big-ass tents for INDOOR drinking & eating. More jaxes would be a nicety too.
