i know at least one childless (as far as i know! maybe she has an entire secret family!) woman here who has a copper coil. i must ask her where she got it.

Is it me? I bet it is! They don't sell them in the Pound Shop, but you'll get one from the Irish Family Planning Association. They aren't keen to give them to young women because they do increase the risk of getting an infection in your insides, and mostly because it is a bit trickier to get it in when a babby hasn't passed through your cervix and given it a good stretching.

I've had a copper coil for about 2 and half years. Apart from initial discomfort and bleeding directly after the insertion, the only side effect for me has been slightly heavier periods.

I'd recommend the IFPA, the nurse that I chatted to was very forthcoming in discussing my non-hormonal contraceptive options, and there is an older male doctor there (I've forgotten his name) who is lovely to deal with and very quick at fitting the coil.
